JOB SUMMARY:

Civilian employees serve a vital role in supporting the Army mission. They provide the skills that are not readily available in the military, but crucial to support military operations. The Army integrates the talents and skills of its military and civilian members to form a Total Army.

About the Position:
This position is a TERM position. It is temporary and may be extended up to a maximum of four years.

Will pull on-call duty which will require taking calls from the Emergency Room and at times providing psychiatric consultation on medical and surgical patients, as required.

Duty location:  You will be working at William Beaumont Army Medical Center in the Department of Mental Health; Inpatient Psychiatry Service located at Fort Bliss, TX.

Since 1921, William Beaumont Army Medical Center (WBAMC) has provided care for military personnel and their eligible family members. WBAMC is one of two trauma centers in El Paso County and consists of twelve stories that cover more than a half-million square feet of floor space. WBAMC provides trauma care to the surrounding community and a full range of medical care to Fort Bliss, which supports over 19,000 troops and will grow to over 37,000 as it undergoes the largest post expansion in the Army. William Beaumont offers an array of programs in many medical disciplines and has close partnerships with higher learning institutions. As a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, you will:

  • Screen new patients and perform an initial bio-psychosocial assessment, take histories, perform health screening, order diagnostic tests and laboratory studies and interpret data obtained from the results.
  • Provide comprehensive care for psychiatric patients of all ages based upon the multi-disciplinary treatment plan and the mental, emotional and physical needs of the patient and provides assessment of acute and non-acute clinical problems and toxicity's as they relate to a patient's psychiatric condition.
  • Utilize various modalities of care, i.e. therapeutic use of individual and group counseling, crisis intervention and medication management.
  • Prescribe medications according to accepted standards of psychiatric practice that is preferentially evidenced based.

Education: Degree or diploma from a professional nursing program approved by the legally designated State accrediting agency at the time the program was completed by the applicant.

Registration: Active, current registration as a professional nurse in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or territory of the United States.

Experience required: To qualify based on your work experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job.  Specialized experience is defined as: performing routine and comprehensive physical examinations on patients of all ages as well as, reviewing medical histories, and evaluating behavior and reaction patterns used in the care and treatment of psychiatric patients.  This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify.  For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

Education Requirement: Advanced Practice Registered Nurses who complete their respective specialty programs after 31 December 2001 must be graduates of an accredited master's level or doctoral program acceptable to Department of Army that prepares Registered Nurses with additional knowledge and skills to practice in their clinical specialty.

Certification Requirement: Advanced Practice Registered Nurses will maintain current certification by a national certifying body (for example, American Nurses Credentialing Center; American Academy of Nurse Practitioners; National Certification Board of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners and Nurses; American Nurses Association; National Certification Corporation for the Obstetric, Gynecologic, and Neonatal Nursing Specialties), as appropriate, for their specialty area of practice.

  • This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) subject to applicant testing and random drug testing.   • A pre-placement medical examination is required.

  • All Health Care Providers must be able to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) Training and certification that is sponsored or endorsed by the American Heart Association (AHA).  Current Advanced Life Support or other advanced certification does not supersede BLS completion.
