National Capital Parks – East, is a cluster of 9 park areas at multiple locations that are a part of Washington, D.C. and its eastern environments. The park areas encompass over 1,695 acres and offer a wide array of historic, natural, and recreational areas. The resources are as diverse as historic sites, recreation fields, tidal and non-tidal wetlands, meadows and forests, statuary, parkways, and archeological sites.

National Park Service Liaison to the White House is responsible for the grounds and structures surrounding President’s Park, located in the heart of the Nation’s Capital, stand as a symbol of democracy. The White House and its park grounds serve not only as the seat of the executive branch of government of the United States of America, but also as an iconic place for civil discourse.

Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park, is an area of over 20,000 acres and 184.5 miles in length.  The park includes land base in the District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia, including eight counties, five congressional districts, fifteen communities and a nineteen member federal advisory commission.

George Washington Memorial Parkway, is 7,156 acre cluster of park areas associated geographically and organizationally with the Parkway and the Potomac River.  The Parkway itself extends over 38 miles in Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia.



·         Supports the Superintendent in supervision and coordination of NPS park operations, including all program development, implementation, and all aspects of accountability

·         Serves as Deputy Superintendent, sharing fully in the management of the park, with broad latitude for exercising independent action

·         Coordinates with Superintendent to develop and implement annual goals and objectives.

·         Required to act in the absence of the Superintendent.

·         Represents the Superintendent and serves as chief park liaison with federal, state, county, District of Columbia and local governments and community groups.

·         Maintains close liaison with all offices of National Capital Region.

·         Manages a variety of professional and technical functions and major projects.

·         Exercises line authority over park functions and divisions including park administration, maintenance, resource management, interpretation and education, visitor services, safety/risk management and business programs

·         Identifies needs and recommend policies, programs, and standards on a wide variety of park management activities

·         Establishes and maintains an effective working relationship with Departmental, Federal, and local officials, community leaders, and the general public

·         Formulates, adapts or modifies plans, systems or concepts in order to improve park operations

·         Researches and probes unusually complex and controversial problems that affect the operations of the park

·         Supports overall operations in the formulation and execution of an annual base operating budget

·         Advances the NPS goals of nurturing lifelong connections between the public and parks while working in our Nation’s Capital, a dynamic urban area
