For over 60 years, the National Science Foundation (NSF) has remained the premier Federal agency supporting basic research at the frontiers of discovery across all fields, as well as science and engineering education at all levels.

The NSF is seeking candidates for a Staff Associate position within the Office of the Assistant Director (OAD), Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE), Arlington, VA.

The Staff Associate will provide long-range planning and development of new areas of innovation as related to the administration's national priorities; and will develop the academic-industry-government partnerships necessary for them to become successful. The employee will focus on the research, education, and cyberinfrastructure necessary to foster collaborations in the domains of smart health, clean energy, smart transportation systems, cyberlearning and advanced manufacturing. The employee will coordinate with other directorates at NSF, across the federal government in the Networking IT R&D (NITRD) program, and with the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP). The employee will develop new programs, processes, and partnerships, for example, to help train returning veterans as well as to lead interagency working groups focused on next generation communications networks.

The individual selected for this position will serve as a Staff Associate. The Staff Associate is responsible for:

  • Advising and assisting the CISE AD and DAD in the development of long-range plans that are targeted to cutting-edge R&D opportunities;
  • Collaboratively with members of cross-cutting teams and working groups, prepare well-written presentations, reports or other written materials, as needed;
  • Actively engaging in frequent discussions with the research and education community to remain cognizant of ongoing advances in the field and identifying promising new areas for exploration;

  • Maintaining familiarity with salient, current research and education developments in relevant fields through visits, attending courses and conferences and other developmental activities (subject to availability of funds);
  • Keeping colleagues at NSF aware of research and education and other professional activities in area of specialization;
  • Providing leadership in the implementation of NSF policy and building public trust through timely and transparent practices;
  • Working effectively in a team environment, demonstrating considerate, professional interactions with scientific, engineering, and administrative colleagues; and
  • Seeking ways to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the organization.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in any field related to the work performed at NSF, plus after award of the Ph.D., four or more years of successful research, research administration, and/or managerial experience pertinent to the position.


You will need to successfully complete a background security investigation before you can be appointed into this position.
