This position is located in the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), Division of Intramural Research (DIR), Research Technologies Branch (RTB), Research Technologies Section (RTS) , at the Rocky Mountain Laboratories in Hamilton, Montana.

As a Biologist you will lead and conduct Next Generation Gene Sequencing data analysis in the Research Technologies Branch.  Additionally, you will perform the following duties and functions:

  • Independently plan, develop, implement, and manage all Next Generation Sequencing data analysis efforts, approaches, and protocols under study.
  • Utilize Illumina and Roche 454-specific software, hardware, and server systems to analyze Next Generation Sequencing data including Linux and Unix operating systems.
  • Evaluate progress of Next Generation Sequencing data analysis efforts to ensure that they are proceeding as planned.
  • Develop new Next Generation Gene Sequencing data analysis methods and collect, analyze, organize, and record Next Generation Sequencing data appropriate for publication and future reference by others.
  • Manage the day-to-day operation of local Central Processing Units (CPUs) which interface with a wide range of servers and Information Technology (IT) equipment

Basic Qualification Requirements:

You must have completed the requirements for a bachelor’s (or graduate) degree in a biological science, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to this position, from an accredited college or university.

OR

You must have a combination of experience and education which includes courses comparable to a major in a biological science, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry or related disciplines appropriate to this position, AND appropriate experience or additional education which demonstrates similarly appropriate skills or abilities needed to perform the duties of this position.

In addition to meeting the basic qualification requirements indicated above, you must meet the additional experience requirement as described below:

Specialized Experience Requirement:

You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS- 12 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: designing, organizing, and conducting original Next Generation Sequencing data analysis and interpreting scientific implications; resolving a wide range of problems in the analysis of data involving Next Generation Sequencing by applying, adapting and modifying software, hardware, and computational server systems, procedures and techniques; evaluating Next Generation Sequencing data using state-of-the-art bioinformatics algorithms and computational servers; and publishing results in scientific journals or other related professional publications or presenting information at scientific meetings.

 

Selective Factor:

In order to meet minimum qualification requirements you must demonstrate possession of the selective factor(s) of this position.   Selective factor includes: Skill in utilizing Next Generation Sequencing data analysis technologies.
