Civilian employees serve a vital role in supporting the Army mission.  They provide the skills that are not readily available in the military, but crucial to support military operations.  The Army integrates the talents and skills of its military and civilian members to form a Total Army.

About the Position

This is a Student Trainee (Engineering Technician), GS-0899-04 position with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Little Rock District, Engineering and Construction Division. This position is temporary, not to exceed 120 days, and may be extended without further competition.

Position(s) will be filled under the Department of the Army Pathways Intern Program.

The Department of the Army Pathways Internship Program is designed to provide students currently enrolled in a wide variety of educational institutions, from high school to graduate level, with opportunities to work and get paid while exploring federal careers through a job with the Department of Army.

The Department of the Army Pathways Interns may be converted to a permanent position within 120 days of successful completion of the program.

To be eligible for conversion to a permanent or term position, Interns must:

•   Be a U.S. Citizen
•   Complete at least 640 hours of work experience acquired through the Internship Program
•   Complete their degree or certificate requirements
•   Meet the Office of Personnel Management's qualification standards for the position to which the Intern will be converted
•   Meet agency-specific requirements as specified in the Participant's Agreement, and;
•   Perform their job successfully as documented through performance evaluations and/or completion of an Individual Development Plan (IDP)

NOTE: Proof of current/future enrollment (ex. transcript, class schedule, enrollment verification, etc.) is required at time of application. Applicants graduating in Spring 2014 MUST submit proof of continuing education in order to be considered for a summer internship.

As a Student Trainee (Engineering Technician), you will perform a variety of tasks in support of civil engineering operations. Your typical assignments may include any of the following: 

•   Performing a variety of computations in English or International System of Units (SI)
•   Determining areas using computer-aided design and drafting (CADD), geographic information systems (GIS), standard arithmetical formulas, or simple trigonometry
•   Loading data into the District's Enterprise databases and systems
•   Computing weights, centers of gravity and quantities
•   Plotting sections, graphs, curves, and charts
•   Performing simple layouts of drawings
•   Using computers to input data and run programs
•   Compiling data used in the preparation of reports and memoranda
•   Writing algorithms in Python or other languages to automate District processes

To qualify for Pathways Internship Program positions, applicants must meet the education requirements. Your qualifications will be evaluated based upon your total amount of completed education. No experience is required for this position.

To qualify for the GS-04 you must possess the following education:

  • Completion of at least 2 full academic years of post-high school study or associate's degree

NOTE: A full academic year of undergraduate, vocational, trade or technical educate is the number of credit hours determined by the college, university or school to represent 1 year of full-time study. One year of full-time academic study will be otherwise defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university, or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial, or technical school.


NOTE:
A copy of your unofficial transcripts and proof of enrollment (class schedule, enrollment verification, etc.) MUST be submitted at the time of application. You may be required to submit additional copies of transcripts prior to your appointment.

Pathways Internship Program Requirements:

  • Must be at least 16 years of age
  • Must be currently enrolled in an accredited school
  • Must be seeking a degree, diploma, or certificate (e.g., high school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED), Vocational/Technical Certificate, Associate's Degree, Bachelor's Degree, Master's Degree, etc.)
  • Must be taking (at least) a half-time course load, as defined by the school.

HOW YOU WILL BE EVALUATED:

You will not be eligible for benefits for this temporary appointment unless your appointment is extended for one year. If you are extended and complete one year of current continuous employment, you may elect health benefits at that time, for which you will be charged the full premium.
