The Indian Health Service (IHS) is the principal federal health care provider and health advocate for American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN). The IHS goal is to raise Indian health status to the highest possible level. IHS provides leadership and direction to programs and activities designed to improve health outcomes to over 1.9 million AI/AN through a system of IHS, Tribal, and Urban operated facilities and programs.

The position is located in the Division of Community Health Services, Health Promotion Disease Prevention Department, Community Uranium Exposure/Journey to Healing Branch at the Northern Navajo Medical Center, Shiprock, New Mexico.

Serves as Program Director of the Community Uranium Exposure - Journey to Healing, a Navajo Area Indian Health Service program.  Address health and health care issues related to non-occupational exposure to uranium. Position reports to the Diabetes Control Officer.

  • Provides direction to program staff and exercises full supervisory responsibilities for planning and developing program objectives and goals; Oversee, assign, and/or arrange for the details of the community events; develop and maintain working collaborative relationships with service units, tribal facilities, and other agencies.
  • Determines needs in the health screening program in collaboration with medical director and other advisors; includes health education and promotion topics at community events; and arranges for and provides health screening in a variety of settings.
  • Presents the  program and related information to the public, staff, other federal agencies, etc.; consult and collaborate with medicine people individually and with medicine people organizations; works in collaboration with researchers doing community uranium exposure-related studies.
  • Oversees the program’s budget assuring funds are appropriately spent and accounted for; submits annual budget request.
  • Provides patient care independently to patients of all ages and genders in a variety of settings, clinical, office, community; Secures health and medical history from patients, record findings, and makes clinical evaluation; Examines patients and performs initial work-up and assessment of patients care and treatment; Determines the need for and orders laboratory tests, X-rays, and other procedures necessary to complete assessment of the patient.

BASIC REQUIREMENT(S):  All Nurse Practitioner applicants must meet all of the BASIC REQUIREMENTS listed below:


EDUCATION:  Degree or diploma from a professional nursing program approved by the legally designated State accredit agency at the time the program was completed by the applicant.


LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must have possess active, current registration as a professional nurse in a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a Territory of the United States.  Knowledge of and skills in current professional nursing practices are required in the particular field of nursing for the position being filled.


CERTIFICATION:  Certification by the appropriate certifying body as a Nurse Practitioner as prescribed by the IHS Licensure Policy.



GS-12: 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-11 grade level.


SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of a Nurse Practitioner, and that is typically in or related to the work of a Nurse Practitioner. To be credible, examples of specialized experience: knowledge of concepts, principles, and practices of advance practice nursing (APN) with extensive clinical experience and training in providing health care in the APN role; Knowledge of anatomy and physiology, basic observations of health and disease states and therapeutic modalities employed to prevent and correct disease states; Ability to interpret selected laboratory and radiological findings; Skill at making diagnoses, choosing, initiating, and modifying selected therapies; Knowledge of standard recommendations for periodic health and cancer screening for patients of all ages.


Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).
