The Recent Graduates Program offers opportunity for developmental experiences in the Federal Government. This program is intended for individuals who have recently graduated from qualifying educational institutions or programs. To be eligible, applicants must apply within two years of degree or certificate completion (except for veterans precluded from doing so due to their military service obligation, who will have up to six years after degree completion to apply). Upon completion of the Recent Graduates Program, candidates may be converted into permanent positions within the Federal Government. The program lasts for 1 year (unless the training requirements of the position warrant a longer and more structured training program).
This position is located in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Health Effects Laboratory Division (HELD), Morgantown, WV.

DUTIES:

  • Provide an efficient flow of tissue from necropsy, through processing, embedding, sectioning, staining, and return of slides to the pathologist or researcher.
  • Process specimens using equipment, instruments, or techniques that are necessary to prepare them of specific analysis; control physical conditions; respond to time factors to insure that the physiologic state of the specimen is maintained.
  • Maintain records of protocols, methods, instrument operating procedures and other pertinent data, and will use computer programs as needed.
  • Provide histological support for veterinary pathologists and other researchers in experimental pathology.
  • Use knowledge of instrument operation to interact with equipment service representatives to trouble shoot and/or obtain repairs to equipment as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-_06_ in the Federal service as defined in the next paragraph.

Specialized experience is experience which is directly related to the position which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform the duties of the position to include in performing anatomical pathology technician work in (a) cutting and staining very thin sections of human tissue specimens for microscopic examination; and/or in (b) testing and examining body fluids, etc. for abnormalities in cell structure.

Substitution of Education for Experience for GS-07: Your graduate level education may be substituted in part or whole for the specialized experience required in this position. Your graduate level education must be related to the job being filled and must have provided you with the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to successfully perform the work to be considered for substitution for specialized experience. Submit a copy of your college transcript if you are requesting CDC to consider your graduate level education in determining your qualifications for this position. If selected you will be required to submit an original official transcripts before being appointed.

For GS-07:One (1) year of graduate-level education.

OR

Possess superior academic achievement. Superior Academic Achievement is defined as: cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 for all completed undergraduate courses, or those completed in the last 2 years of undergraduate study; (2) GPA 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 for all courses in your major field of study, or those courses in your major completed in the last two years; (3) Rank in the upper one-third of your class in the college, university, or major subdivision; OR (4) Membership in a national honor society (other than freshman honor societies).

ORHave a combination of specialized experience and graduate level education that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for the position.
