The position is responsible for providing professional wildlife expertise in the protection, management, and improvement of wildlife within the framework of multiple-use management of forest and rangelands.

Plans, organizes and implements wildlife habitat management programs, with emphasis on maintaining and enhancing biodiversity.

Develops or provides input into the annual program of work determining budgeting and staffing needs.

Participates on interdisciplinary teams; provides the analysis needed to assess the effects of management activities; prepares or reviews biological evaluations for threatened, endangered or sensitive species.

Coordinates project work with other Unit personnel; prepares reports with recommendations; develops and implements wildlife interpretative programs and other means to promote the Fish and Wildlife programs on the unit.

You must possess the Basic Requirements identified below to be considered eligible.

Bachelor's Degree: biological science that included at least 9 semester hours in such wildlife subjects as mammalogy, ornithology, animal ecology, wildlife management, or research courses in the field of wildlife biology; and at least 12 semester hours in zoology in such subjects as general zoology, invertebrate zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy, physiology, genetics, ecology, cellular biology, parasitology, entomology, or research courses in such subjects (Excess courses in wildlife biology may be used to meet the zoology requirements where appropriate.); and at least 9 semester hours in botany or the related plant sciences.


Combination of education and experience -- equivalent to a major in biological science (i.e., at least 30 semester hours), with at least 9 semester hours in wildlife subjects, 12 semester hours in zoology, and 9 semester hours in botany or related plant science, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Research positions:
Bachelor's Degree with major in wildlife biology, zoology, or botany that included at least 30 semester hours of course work in biological science and 15 semester hours in the physical, mathematical, and earth sciences. This course work must have included:

At least 9 semester hours of training applicable to wildlife biology in such subjects as mammalogy, ornithology, animal ecology, wildlife management, principles of population dynamics, or related course work in the field of wildlife biology; and

At least 12 semester hours in zoological subjects such as invertebrate zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy of the vertebrates, embryology, animal physiology, entomology, herpetology, parasitology, and genetics; and

At least 9 semester hours in the field of botany and related plant science; and

At least 15 semester hours of training in any combination of two or more of the following: chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, soils, and/or geology.

In addition to the basic requirements, the following additional education and/or experience are qualifying.  Transcripts must be provided for qualifications based on education.  Your application or resume must clearly show that you possess the specialized experience requirements.  Specialized experience is defined as experience that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled and has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.

GS-11:  3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree (coursework directly related to position being filled); one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 level; or an appropriate combination of specialized experience and graduate level education (beyond what is required for a master's degree, i.e., more than 36 semester hours leading to a Ph.D.).  Examples of specialized experience are: Prepares wildlife management input for the unit land management planning team. Prepares environmental analysis reports. Develops biological evaluations for review by journey-level biologists.  Recommends, prepares, or reviews annual operating plans and budgets for wildlife habitat improvement and animal damage control projects in consideration of biological needs, project standards, and the needs of other resources. Participates in wildlife monitoring program activities by making observations, gathering data, and reporting findings. Gathers information to be used in environmental assessments and environmental impact statements affecting wildlife resources.

TIME-IN-GRADE REQUIREMENT: If you are a current federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must meet time-in-grade (TIG) requirements with 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled. This requirement must be met within 30 days of the closing date of this announcement.
