JOB SUMMARY:

Shiloh National Military Park and National Cemetery are located on the west bank of the Tennessee River in Hardin County Tennessee.   The county population stands at 24,000 with roughly a third of the residents residing in and around Savannah, the county seat located 12-road miles northeast of the park.  The second oldest national military park, Shiloh is considered one of the best preserved of the nation's Civil War battlefields.   Located within a pastoral setting of fields and forest, the 4,000-acre park is inhabited by a healthy diversity of native flora and fauna.   The park administers a second detached unit in Corinth, Mississippi,25 miles southwest.   Both Savannah and Corinth provide a full range of community services: public schools, shopping,restaurants, theaters, sports, as well as medical and dental facilities.   The relative cost of living is moderate.   Several colleges are located within a 50-100 mile radius at Jackson, Henderson, and Memphis, Tennessee; Florence, Alabama;and Bonneville, Mississippi.   The lower Tennessee Valley offers abundant recreational opportunities with numerous ways to make use of and enjoy public land.   The summers are warm and humid, with averaged ay temperatures ranging from the middle 80's to low 90's.   The relative short winter, with occasional snow and ice, offers relative few consecutive days where the average temperature remains below freezing.

These are temporary positions not expected to exceed 1039 hours (6 months) in a one year period, however incumbents may be terminated sooner or extended, if the need arises, and may be rehired without further competition if seasonal hours are not exceeded.

Similar positions may be filled through this vacancy should the need arise.

There is NO park housing available.

Incumbent operates heavy power equipment such as lawnmowers, chain saws and all types of hand tools such as shovels, rakes, and lawn edging equipment to maintain buildings, grounds, roads, trails and commemorative resources.  

 

Loads and unloads supplies and materials from trucks,trailers, and dollies.   Moves furniture,removes and sets signs, paints picnic tables, signs and commemorative resources such as plaques, monuments, cannons and carriages; trims trees and shrubbery,picks up litter and performs janitorial duties as needed.

 

Moves heavily loaded wheelbarrows and hand trucks;uses heavy type power mowers including adjusting blades, cleaning and oiling.   Cuts heavy trees with axe or chainsaw; stacks heavy logs, lumber and sacks of cement or performs other duties requiring similar judgment and comparable physical effort.

Requirements

Temporary employees earn annual leave and sick leave, and are entitled to be paid for federal holidays that fall within their regularly scheduled tour of duty.

OTHER INFORMATION:

Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: The work requires the exertion of moderate to heavy physical effort, including lifting and moving objects over 50 pounds, and in some cases, carrying 80 to 100 pounds (or more) with assistance.   

 

WORKING CONDITIONS: The work is performed outside under all kinds of weather conditions. Frequently exposed to weather and temperature extremes, drafts, noise, dust and dirt, and possibility of bruises, muscle strains, cuts and scrapes. Employee is required to follow proper safety procedures and use standard safety equipment.
