This a Permanent Full Time Seasonal Position Subject to Furlough (STF) located at Theodore Roosevelt National Park, Medora, North Dakota.  The selectee will perform duties related to janitorial, grounds-keeping, buildings, and roads and trails maintenance.  You will be guaranteed at least 26 weeks of employment each year, with the remainder subject to non-work, non-pay time.  However, you may be authorized to work up to 48 weeks each year, depending upon workload and funding.  During periods of employment, the tour of duty is 40 hours per week.  Evening, Weekend, and Holiday work is also required.

This position is located in the South Unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park. The selectee performs duties related to janitorial, grounds-keeping, buildings, and roads and trails maintenance. Performs janitorial work in all buildings located within the South Unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Operates sweepers, vacuums, floor polishers, carpet extractors and other mechanical and hand operated janitorial equipment. Performs a variety of minor building maintenance work such as preparing and painting of interior and exterior surfaces, plumbing, electrical, and carpentry repairs. Operates riding and push-type mowers, weed trimmers, chain saws, ATV's and motor vehicles. Performs a variety of grounds maintenance duties such as reseeding, mowing, fertilizing and watering lawns, trimming trees and hedges and general structural maintenance. Performs trail maintenance on walkways, paved and unpaved trails; and assists higher graded employees on building maintenance and road repair projects.  The work is performed both indoors and outdoors, often under adverse weather conditions. Work requires frequent bending, stooping, walking, standing and working in cramped positions and may involve some climbing. Work requires lifting and moving heavy items. Completes daily work accomplishment reports.

AREA INFORMATION:  Theodore Roosevelt National Park is located in the badlands of western North Dakota, and includes the Theodore Roosevelt Wilderness Area. The park consists of three separate units: South Unit, Elkhorn Ranch Unit, and North Unit. The colorful Little Missouri River badlands provide a scenic backdrop to Theodore Roosevelt National Park, which is home to a variety of plants and abundant wildlife, including bison, elk, wild horses, long horn steers, and bighorn sheep.

This position is based at the South Unit park headquarters in Medora, ND (population 100), located on I-94, 26 miles from the Montana line. Medora is a mostly seasonal town with a wider variety of services available from Memorial Day through Labor Day.  During the rest of the year, services are limited but include a U.S. Post Office, bank, restaurant, convenience store/gas station, and a few shops. The nearest medical facilities are located in Dickinson, ND, along 1-94, approximately 35 miles east of Medora.

Summers are warm and sunny with temperatures occasionally reaching 100 degrees F. Afternoon thunderstorms are common. Winters are invigorating, with temperatures sometimes reaching -35 degrees F. Skies are usually sunny. Snow is sporadic in the relatively dry climate, but heavy snow and blizzards are possible. For more information about the park go to www.nps.gov/thro. To qualify for this position, you must possess the basic qualifying experience listed below as well as selective factors as described in the occupational/assessment questionnaire.

Applicants must be physically fit and, as required in Office of Personnel Management Qualifications Handbook X-118C, must possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities of the elements listed in Section 25 of the Online Occupational Questionnaire to perform the duties of the position at the level for which they are applying.   Qualification requirement emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  The nature of this position requires walking on rough, uneven terrain, stooping, bending, and standing for long periods of time, and ability to push, pull, and lift items up to 100 pounds. 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:  Work is performed inside and outside. Outside work exposes the employee to adverse weather conditions such as snow, rain, dust, noise, direct sunlight and temperatures ranging from -40 to 110 degrees F. May be subject to cuts, abrasions, and insect bites and wearing protective equipment and clothing that are sometimes heavy and uncomfortable.
