This position is located within the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, Office of Pharmaceutical Science, in Silver Spring, MD.

  • Conducts and evaluates studies designed to demonstrate the microbiological quality of products.
  • Reviews and evaluates all microbiological data submitted during the drug review process of abbreviated new drug applications including supplements and amendments.
  • Prepares summaries regarding microbiological procedures and data related to the documents submitted.
  • Reviews application data that demonstrate the consistency, reliability, and accuracy of the sterilization method(s).

To qualify for the Microbiologist applicants must demonstrate through their resume and supporting documents (i.e. transcript) that they meet the following education AND experience requirements:

Basic Education Requirements

Have a degree in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology or other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent; or a combination of education (equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that includes courses shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Specialized Experience Requirements

GS-12: Have at least one year of specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-11 in the Federal service, assisting in the review and evaluation of microbiological data; reviewing microbiological studies related to the microbiological efficacy of products; and communicating orally and in writing regarding microbiological studies/findings.

GS-13: Have at least one year of specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-12 in the Federal service, reviewing and evaluating microbiological data; reviewing microbiological studies related to the microbiological efficacy of products; and advising on microbiological data and regulatory recommendations.

Time-in-Grade Requirements:   Under competitive merit promotion procedures, any individual who is currently holding, or who has held within the previous 52 weeks, a General Schedule position under a non-temporary appointment in the competitive or excepted service, must meet "time-in-grade" requirements (have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade of the grade for which you are applying). Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to current employees applying for a Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment. NOTE: You must provide a copy of a recent SF-50, "Notice of Personnel Action" that indicates proof of status and time-in-grade eligibility. The SF-50 must include your position, title, series, grade, step, tenure, type of service (Competitive or Excepted) and career status (career or career-conditional).

This position requires specific coursework and/or a degree to meet the basic education requirement. You must submit an official transcript, unofficial transcript, or a list including courses, grades earned, completion dates, and quarter and semester hours earned. Your transcript(s) must clearly demonstrate the course(s) listed in the qualification requirement section. If the transcript(s) does not clearly demonstrate this you must submit a copy of the course description and/or other documentation demonstrating that the courses are equivalent. Degree requirements must be met within 30 days of the closing date of this job announcement and your transcript(s) submitted must reflect this.
