 The Agricultural Research Service is seeking qualified students to participate in the 2014 Pathways Internship Program.  These temporary appointments are expected to begin in May and extend beyond the summer months.  Internships are open to individuals who have been accepted for enrollment or who are enrolled and seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) from a qualifying educational institution on a full or half-time basis.

Travel and relocation expenses will not be paid.

This announcement will be used to fill full-time and part-time internship positions. This Job opportunity announcement may be used to fill additional vacancies.

Appointments may be extended in accordance with Pathways Program guidelines.

Duties

DUTIES:

Interns who are assigned to a GS-0499, Student Trainee (Biological Science) position perform standardized routines in support of research projects in a laboratory, field and/or greenhouse setting. Typical, but not all-inclusive duties require a general knowledge of basic biological science and are illustrated by performance of any combination of the following:
• Preparing routine media and solutions by weighing and measuring constituents according to established methods
• Using common laboratory equipment and apparatus such as autoclaves, sterilizers, centrifuges and homogenizers
• Preparing labels for specimens
• Assisting in plot preparation and maintenance, plant harvesting and sample preparation and maintenance, as well as sample and seed sorting or processing for analysis and storage; watering, fertilizing, weeding, and maintaining plants
• Keeping detailed records of experimental data and tabulating data using personal computers and software packages
