The Atlanta VAMC has 405 authorized inpatient beds (273 hospital, 120 Community Living Center and 12 PRRTP) and is a tertiary care facility classified as a Complexity Level 1A facility. It is a teaching hospital, providing a full range of patient care services complete with state-of-the-art technology, education and research. Comprehensive health care is provided through emergency medicine, primary care, tertiary care, and long-term care in the areas of medicine, surgery, mental health, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, oncology, dentistry, geriatrics, and extended care. The Atlanta VAMC is part of the VA Southeast Network (VISN 7), which includes facilities in Georgia, Alabama and South Carolina. The Atlanta VAMC Community Living Center serves metro Atlanta and includes extended care rehabilitation, psycho-geriatric care, and general long term care. The facility also serves as a prosthetics treatment center, fabricating and supplying mechanical devices such as artificial limbs for patients within the states of Georgia, South Carolina and Alabama.

Note:  The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-13.  The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS-11 to GS-13.  The Professional Standards Board (a peer-review group) will review the selected candidate’s education and experience and recommend the grade and step at which the candidate will be placed.  The salary is based on the grade and step approved for the selected candidate.

This Clinical Psychologist will serve as a professional staff member of the Geriatrics & Extended Care Service Line. The incumbent provides a full range of psychological services within the areas of assignment that include: Pain Psychology/Behavioral Medicine/Behavior Health.

The incumbent will be in the HBPPC (Home Based Primary and Palliative Care) Section of GECR.  The psychological care to the patients, families and caregivers is performed in the home.  Driving of a government vehicle to visit the patients may be up to 50 miles (one way) from the duty location.  Meetings of the entire HBPPC team occur weekly and are required.  Training in other areas of GECR SL like CLC (Community Living Center) and Contract Nursing Home clinic will occur for possible coverage as necessary.  Other duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

   · Administrative duties, including developing and implementation of clinical programs for a team of treatment

         providers. Also, scheduling of Veterans and related issues, returning Veterans' phone calls, Report writing,

         and attending organizational meetings.

· Provide a full range of diagnostic and evaluation services appropriate to the interdisciplinary pain management setting, especially in the areas of psychological evaluation of emotional and behavioral problems and suicide assessment.

· Develops, implements, and documents the psychotherapeutic treatment plan for an assigned caseload of patients, including prompt completion of clinical reminders.

· Use a variety of intelligence and personality assessment measures.

· Facilitates patient and family education appropriate to the setting and the specific presenting issues.

· Plan appropriate clinical treatment for individual patients based on data gathered during assessments.

· Promote, supervise and provide individual and group psychotherapy.

· Lead a group and/or conduct individual therapy sessions using a full range of therapeutic techniques and skills.

· Provides consultation services to support team decision-making, building on physician and healthcare team interventions and improving team-patient working relationships.

· Consults with medical center staff on a wide variety of patient care issues..

· Remains involved in program evaluation and/or research activities.
