This is a full-time TERM not-to-exceed four years, position in the Maintenance Division of Scotts Bluff National Monument, Gering, Nebraska.AREA INFORMATION: Scotts Bluff National Monument is located in the western Nebraska panhandle. The park is 3 miles from Gering and 5 miles from Scottsbluff (combined population of approximately 23,000). Summer temperatures are generally in the 90s; days are generally sunny and dry, with occasional afternoon thunder showers. Winters are generally windy and can be extremely cold and changeable. Good schools, a 2-year community college, good medical facilities, and virtually every type of recreation are available in the area.

The incumbent works as a WG-5 Maintenance Worker.  The incumbent will be supervised by the Facility Manager and work under the direction of work leaders or other higher graded employees and can be assigned to a variety of duties. The incumbent will work as a core member on a small team (3 permanent employees and 2-5 seasonal employees), ensuring year-round maintenance operations.  These duties may include, but are not limited to, minor maintenance and repair of buildings and utility systems, including simple carpentry, plumbing, painting, utility systems operation and repair, trash pick-up and disposal, grounds work or custodial duties involving the daily cleaning and upkeep of visitor use facilities, such as the Visitor Center, comfort stations, employee use areas or other custodial duties as assigned.

The incumbent operates light trucks and bobcat loaders and/or truck-mounted plows to remove snow from parking lots and residential areas.  The incumbent may be required to operate a backhoe and loaders for emergency repairs of water and wastewater systems.  The incumbent may be responsible for repairing damaged sidewalks, steps, walls, curbs and ramps.  The incumbent will utilize a pneumatic hammer, concrete saw, trowel, edger and float.  The incumbent may trim and clear brush and branches using axes, hatchets, clippers, chain saws, and hand saws.  They may also remove debris from water drainage ditches, pick up and dispose of litter along roadsides, parking lots and other areas.  The incumbent uses a variety of hand and power tools such as hammers, wrenches, tape measures, hand saws, levels, power drills, power saws, power nail guns and stationary shop equipment such as table saws, drill presses and sanders.  The incumbent will use various painting equipment to prepare and paint a variety of surfaces, buildings and structures.  The use of lift devices, scaffolds, and ladders are required.

The incumbent may also use a variety of custodial chemical cleaning products, hand tools and equipment, such as general purpose cleaners, mild acid toilet bowl cleaners, carpet shampoo and shampooer, glass cleaners, brooms, mops, vacuums, and power washers.

The incumbent will operate a variety of machinery, such as passenger vehicles, 4X4 trucks, utility terrain vehicles (UTVs), lawn mowers, and material handling equipment.  The incumbent will participate in tailgate safety meetings and adhere to developed standard operating procedures (SOP) to ensure safe work processes are being followed. The incumbent is responsible for following NPS and Park policies and guidelines related to ethics, conduct, and safety.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The incumbent works from ladders, scaffolds, and platforms, to paint where surfaces or parts of a building or structure are hard to reach; this will require the incumbent to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions.   The incumbent frequently lifts or carries equipment or materials that weigh up to 40 pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed inside and outside where dirt, spray, and fumers are present. Also required to work in inclement and/or wear protective equipment and clothing that are sometimes heavy and uncomfortable.
