Located along world famous Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco, California, the park has the 12th largest visitation in the system exceeding over 4 million visits annually. The park's location, resources, and exceptional maritime collections interest a broad and diverse group of visitors, maritime advocates, researchers, partner organizations, community groups, elected officials, and city/county and state agencies. In addition to its many constituents, the park has two Cooperation Associations/Friends organizations and partnership agreements with the San Francisco Senior Center, a Sea Scout unit of the Boys Scouts of America, and the Dolphin and South End Swimming and Rowing Clubs. San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park offers the sights, sounds, smells and stories of Pacific Coast maritime history and is surrounded by urban and suburban communities; it is a complex working environment with changing priorities. Tour of Duty: This position is five 8-hour days. Flexible work schedules are available.

This position is located in the Facilities and Ships Division of San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park. The incumbent is responsible for landscape management pertaining to maintenance and repair work in various areas within the park depending upon seasonal requirements and landscape priorities. The incumbent is required to work with other trades, maintenance workers, volunteers, and other agency employees. Duties of the position are as follows: Irrigation System, Maintenance and Repair, Turf Management, Pest Control, Pruning and Hedging, Ornamental Landscape Maintenance and Landscape Construction.

There is no specific length of training or experience required.  However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the following knowledge and abilities to successfully perform the work of a Gardener as described under Major Duties above.

  • Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision.

  • Possession of a Valid State Drivers License.
  • Technical Practices - Theoretical, Precise, Artistic.

Your rating will be based on both your responses to the Job Assessment Questionnaire and the information stated in your resume. The assessment questions relate to the following knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs)/competencies that are required to perform the work of this position. Only education and experience acquired by the closing filing deadline will be considered. 

Category rating procedures will be used to rate and rank candidates. Candidates will be ranked into 3 categories: 

Category Group I (Best Qualified) - applicants who possess experience and/or education that well exceeds the minimum qualifications of the position, including all selective factors and all quality ranking factors. Applicants considered best qualified must be highly proficient in all requirements of the job and be able to perform effectively in the position.
Category Group II (Well Qualified) - applicants possessing experience that exceeds the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors, and who are proficient in most of the requirements of the job. 

Category Group III (Qualified) - applicants possessing experience that meets the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors, and who are proficient in some, but not all of the requirements of the job.

VETERANS PREFERENCE: Veterans Preference applies to category rating. Within each quality category, veteran's preference eligibles are listed first, including CP, CPS, XP, and TP. In addition, veterans who have a 10% or more service-connected compensable disability (CP or CPS) are placed at the top of the highest quality category. Applicants referred are listed on the selection certificate alphabetically (veteran's preference eligibles before non-veterans) without scores.

Order of Consideration: Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications required by the position will be considered in the following order: (1) best qualified applicants entitled to 10-point veterans' preference who have a compensable service-connected disability of 10 percent or more, best qualified applicants entitled to 10-point or 5-point veterans' preference, and then all other best qualified applicants, (2) well qualified applicants entitled to 10-point or 5-point veterans' preference and then all other well qualified applicants, (3) qualified applicants entitled to 10-point or 5-point veterans' preference and then all other qualified applicants.

Individuals who have special priority selection rights under CTAP/ICTAP must be rated well-qualified under Category Ranking procedures, for the position to receive consideration for special priority selection. Well qualified is defined as meeting or exceeding the fully successful level for competencies required by the position.
