The primary purpose of this position is:  to support the Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA) on a wide variety of education, personnel, administrative and logistical matters and to serve as Resource Advisor; to serve as project officer to the VPAA for the faculty management program; to serve as the academic focal point for Air University educational/instructional technology matters; represent the university at various educational organizational and initiatives, both internal and external; works in a diverse environment which educates a wide variety of military and DOD civilian students annually from all branches of service, and includes international students from over 75 foreign countries.

Supports the Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA) on a wide variety of education, personnel, administrative and logistical matters, both orally and in writing and also serves as an advisor to management on administrative matters. Implements and articulates policies and procedures, providing technical guidance to senior commanders, directors and special staff.  Conducts or participants in the evaluation of administrative programs, systems and methods and identify ways to improve the efficiency and effectiveness at the university level.  Participates in developing and implementing long- and short-range plans, procedures, and policies relating to administrative needs.  Manages the faculty management program for use in making program decisions involved in the management of approximately 120 civilian and 300 military faculty across the university.  Assists the CAO in decisions regarding civilian (Title 10) advertising and faculty hiring, appraisals, reappointments, promotion and tenure, leave without pay issues, merit pay, bonuses, and faculty databases.  Maintains faculty records and provides current and historical information for surveys throughout the year by maintaining a faculty database and other sources of faculty data which are kept for data driven decision making.   Participates in special projects and initiatives and performs special assignments. 


Serves as a deputy director to the Vice President for Academic Affairs.  Reports directly to the VPAA.  The incumbent directs the operation of the AU/CF office, which serves as the principal architect of resident and non-resident (distributed learning) components of the continuum of education; provides oversight of curriculum integration throughout the continuum and is office of primary responsibility for continuum’s strategic guidance and assessment of compliance. 


Performs budget formulation work involving preparation and implementation of detailed analyses and estimates annual funding needs for one or more future budget years and monitors obligations incurred and resulting expenditures of funds.  Performs duties relative to justification, budgeting and funding of O&M funded programs in accordance with regulatory requirements and procedures.  Prepares detailed plans, budget, and schedules for the Chief Academic Office and participates with management in fiscal planning, responsible for effectively integrating requirements into the annual Program Objective Memorandum (POM).

The incumbent must possess a Master's degree; however, PhD or appropriate terminal degree from accredited resident program is preferred.


Academic rank for the position is Administrative Faculty.

Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the requirements. This job is being filled by an alternative hiring process and is not in the competitive civil service.  This is an Administratively Determined position in the excepted service.

* The position will be an initial three year appointment with a one-year probationary period, with the potential for continued reappointment for additional 3-5 year terms.
