PATHWAY PROGRAM OVERVIEW: Allows students to be exposed to the work of the Government through Federal internships while pursuing their degree. This position is being filled under the Pathways Internship Program which is designed to provide students enrolled in a wide variety of educational institutions, from high school to graduate level, with paid work opportunities in agencies to explore Federal careers while still in school. The Internship provides manager's a ready source of student employees and potential permanent employees upon completion of the program requirements. It also provides the student with work experience directly related to the curriculum studies or career goals while offering eligibility for non-competitive conversion to permanent employment upon completion. This position is part of the Pathways Internship Program and is located at the Central Office of the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

Incumbent provides administrative and financial support services to the assigned office. The incumbent may be required to assist in the preparation of monthly reports and statements; manage purchase orders, contracts, travel documents and other source documents and ensure they are obligated correctly; maintain automated obligation records and source documents on a daily basis; prepare billings and invoices for accounts receivables; prepare travel authorizations and settle travel vouchers; prepare vendor invoices and other fiscal documents for payment; prepare journal vouchers and entries for projects; reconcile the subsidiary records to the Treasury reports and the automated accounting reports; file, and assist with special projects.

Applicants must be current students pursuing a degree or certificate in a qualifying educational institution.

GS-03: Completion of 1 academic year of post-high school study.
 
GS-04: Completion of two (2) full academic years of post-high school study or associate’s degree.

Your application will be evaluated and rated under DOJ's Category Rating and Selection Procedures. Special Conditions of Employment Section:

Student Trainee work schedule may vary from minimum requirement of 12 hours per week up to 40 hours depending on school schedule and needs of the agency.

Appointments are not to exceed the end of the fiscal year, however, they may be extended on a yearly basis. 

Appointment is subject to satisfactory completion of a pre-employment and panel interview, urinalysis, physical, and background investigation.  All applicants are subject to, and must satisfactorily pass all screening requirements in relation to National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and credit check.

This position is not test-designated and not subject to urinalysis testing under the BOP Drug Free Workplace Plan.

Conversion to the Competitive Service:  Interns may be converted to a permanent position (or, in some limited circumstances, to a term position lasting 1-4 years) within 120 days of successful completion of the program.

This position has a basic educational requirement:  Individuals applying for this position must be enrolled in a degree program directly related to the position.  In order to be eligible for conversion into the competitive service, the incumbent must meet the degree requirements, as governed by the Office of Personnel Management, for this position.

To be eligible for conversion, Interns must:

 
  • Complete at least 640 hours of work experience acquired through the Internship Program;
  • Complete their degree or certificate requirements;
    Meet the qualification standards for the position to which the Intern will be converted;
  • Meet agency-specific requirements as specified in the Participant's Agreement, and perform their job successfully.
    Agencies may waive up to 320 of the required 640 hours of work for Interns who demonstrate high potential as evidenced by outstanding academic achievement and exceptional job performance.  
In addition, students working in agencies through third-party intern providers may count up to 320 of the hours they work toward the 640 hour requirement.

Time spent under previous Internship Program appointments may count towards required work experience hours.  Applicants will be required to provide supporting documentation to support participation in previous programs.

REQUIRED DOCUMENTS:

  • Veterans' Preference Documentation: Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty (DD-214 Member Copy 4); or other official documentation (e.g., documentation of receipt of a campaign badge or expeditionary medal) that shows your military service was performed under honorable conditions.

WHAT TO EXPECT NEXT:

We will notify you of the outcome after each step of the application process has been completed.
