As a Machine Tool Operator, WG-3414-09, Potential WG-3414-10 (Machinist) then, WG-11 (Machinist), you will operate one or more conventional or Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machine tools such as lathes, boring mills, milling machines, grinding machines, planers, shapers or radial drills. At the WG-09 level this is a developmental position designed to prepare the employee for more competitive advancement to the WG-10 and then WG-11 level of work by fabricating assemblies following plans, templates, lay-outs, and/or prints.

 

As a Machinist, WG-3414-10 Potential WG-11 you will continue final training level to prepare the employee in the machinist trade to perform as a full journeyman Machinist. While at the developmental level the incumbent is provided a greater degree to supervision and guidance from supervision or senior workers while being exposed to the breadth of the full performance of the position.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Promotion to the full performance level of WG-11 will be contingent upon the employee being fully qualified to independently set up and operate machine shop equipment such as lathes, jog grinding machines, planers, vertical and horizontal milling machines, boring machines, surface grinders, toll and cutter grinder, cylindrical grinders, drill presses, electrical discharge machines, and Computer Numerically Controlled machines (CNC). Incumbent should also be able to manufacture holding fixtures and other production aids for fastening work to milling machine tables, lathe face plates, planer tables, vertical and horizontal milling machines, and other related machine tools.

 

As a Machinist, WG-3414-11, you will independently set up and operate machine shop equipment such as lathes, jig grinding machines, planer, vertical and horizontal milling machines, boring machines, surface grinders, toll and cutter grinder, cylindrical grinders, drill presses, electrical discharge machines, and Computer Numerically Controlled machines (CNC). You will also:
-Manufacture simple holding fixtures and other production aids for fastening work to milling machine tables, lathe face plates, planer tables, vertical and horizontal milling machines, and other related machine tools.

-Perform minor sheet metal and composite repairs.
-Use a variety of tools (both powered and non-powered) standard and Computer Numeric Controlled (CNC) machines and equipment and precision measurement tools and equipment.

-Maintain equipment records and documents actions and performs duties in a safe manner, utilizing safety practices and procedures.

 

IMPORTANT NOTE: Promotion to the next performance level of WG-10 and then WG-11 will be contingent upon the employee being fully qualified to perform the more routine duties of the trade as instructed by a journey level worker.

SECURITY CLEARANCE: Incumbent must be able to obtain and maintain a SECRET level security clearance as a condition of employment.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: Work encompasses strenuous physical exertion when bending and shaping the more complex items in handling larger and bulkier items. Physical exertion is moderate and includes prolonged standing; climbing up and down ladders and scaffolding; working in cramped and awkward positions while installing items; and reaching, lifting and bending while using hand and powered tools. Weight lifted seldom exceeds 50 pounds.
WORKING CONDITIONS: The work is done indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions. Subject to eye injury, electric shock, broken bones, burns and cuts from shop equipment, cuts from metal, falls from maintenance stands. Burns from hot metal and various chemicals, dermatitis from solvents, cutting solutions and oils. Exposure to fumes, heat, and flying sparks. May be exposed to high noise levels.
