The Alaska Marine Highway Ferry system recently established weekly winter service and twice-weekly summer service to Gustavus for passengers and vehicles. The nearest large city is Juneau, which has most amenities of any large city.  Most supplies and equipment are flown in or transported by ferry or landing craft from Juneau. Recreational activities are centered around outdoor activities including boating, kayaking, fishing, hunting, snowshoeing, and cross country skiing.
