About the Position:
This position is a Firefighter, located in the Directorate of Emergency Services, Fire Protection and Prevention Division, Fort Belvoir, Virginia. This position serves as a fully trained member of a firefighting crew, engaged in the protection of life and property. Firefighters at this level provide a full range of firefighting support administering emergency care and operating under emergency response situations involving hazardous material containments and control, fire prevention inspections and on-site emergency response situations requiring Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) duties and procedures.

  • Work as a member of a firefighting crew engaged in the protection of life and property.
  • Serve as driver-operator of one or more types of major motorized firefighting equipment under all types of weather conditions.
  • Make appropriate decisions relative to firefighting and rescue operations to preserve life, property and the environment.
  • Administer emergency care during high stress and fire rescue situations.
  • Provide basic life support treatment to patients as an Emergency Medical Technician.
  • Respond to aircraft and vehicle emergencies.
  • Operate firefighting apparatus and equipment for special safety use, rescue needs and fire prevention.
  • Direct fire and emergency personnel in responding to medical emergencies to provide care for the sick and injured.
  • Perform alarm room watch on a rotating basis, which includes monitoring fire and rescue radios, automatic alarms, emergency and administrative phone lines and ADP equipment.

Experience required: To qualify based on your work experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job. Specialized experience is defined as: Working as a fully trained member of a firefighting crew engaged in the protection of life and property. Respond to fires using firefighting and rescue techniques, equipment and extinguishing agents utilizing trained knowledge of firefighter theory and characteristics of tools; contaminated and/or hazardous areas requiring the full performance of firefighting tasks to include: building ventilation, fire extinguishing, EMS apparatus operation, protective performance techniques as needed in the event to protect life and property. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

•This position requires Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certification. EMT certification must be at the Basic or higher level issued by the State of Virginia or National Registry.
•This position requires that you possess the Airport Firefighter certification issued by one of the following: Department of Defense (DOD) Firefighter Certification System, International Fire service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or National Professional Qualification System (NPQS)/ProBoard OR be able to obtain the Airport Firefighter certification within one year of start date.
•This position requires that you possess the Driver Operator Pumper certification issued by one of the following: Department of Defense (DOD) Firefighter Certification System, International Fire service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or National Professional Qualification System (NPQS)/ProBoard OR be able to obtain the Driver Operator Pumper certification within one year of start date.
•This position requires that you possess the Firefighter I and Firefighter II certifications issued by one of the following: Department of Defense (DOD) Firefighter Certification, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or National Professional Qualification System (NPQS)/ProBoard.
•This position requires that you possess the HAZMAT Awareness and Operations certifications OR HAZMAT Technician certification issued by one of the following: Department of Defense (DOD) Firefighter Certification, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or National Professional Qualification System (NPQS)/ProBoard.

You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency (knowledge, skills, abilities) in the following areas:

  • Knowledge of firefighting and fire prevention techniques and theory
  • Skill in performing full range of firefighting duties
  • Ability to administer full range of life support and emergency care duties
  • Ability to communicate both orally and in writing
  • Skill in the use of highly specialized firefighting and EMS apparatus and equipment.

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify.  For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
