This position is temporary seasonal, full time, not-to-exceed 1039 hrs duty stationed at Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site, near Williston, North Dakota.

AREA INFORMATION:  Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site is located 25 miles west of Williston, North Dakota (population 18,532), and 24 miles north of Sidney, Montana (population 6,000).   School grades K-12 are available in both Williston and Sidney. Williston state college, Williston offers both community and bachelor degrees. Housing in the community is very limited due to extensive oil exploration activity in the region.

Performs labor and custodial duties including; cleaning offices, public restrooms, and other areas, collecting and transporting garbage, and cleaning floors and carpets. Performs and assists higher graded employees in a variety of tasks related to the upkeep of buildings, utilities, trails, and grounds. Operates riding and small power mowers, gas powered weed eaters, gas powered hand auger, and grounds hand tools such as rakes, pole pruners, hand pruners, and shovels. Operates vehicles (sedans, pickups, and trucks up to one ton capacity) to transport passengers, supplies, or materials. Performs and assists with preparation and painting of various types of surfaces using interior and exterior paints and preservative compounds. Performs and assists higher graded employees in general maintenance and makes repairs to buildings and residences. Performs and assists higher graded employees in minor plumbing repairs and minor electrical work. Performs and assists higher graded employees in maintenance and repairs to items constructed of wood, concrete, metal, timber, stone, and other miscellaneous materials using basic hand and power tools.  Assists with replacing elements to buildings, residences, and equipment such as boards, siding, faucets, and mower blades.  Works indoors and outdoors and may work in adverse weather conditions and on rough or uneven terrain. Handle items which require lifting, pushing and pulling items up to 40 pounds and occasionally as much as 100 pounds. Duties may require working from ladders, scaffold, platforms, and aerial lifts. Employee will work under minimal supervision. *In winter months duties may also include snow shoveling, snow-blowing, snowplowing and snow removal to include sanding both by hand and with mechanical spreader.

To qualify for this position, you must possess the basic qualifying experience listed below as well as selective factors as described in the occupational/assessment questionnaire.

Applicants must be physically fit and, as required in Office of Personnel Management Qualifications Handbook X-118C, and must possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities of the elements listed in Section 25 of the Online Occupational Questionnaire to perform the duties of the position at the level for which they are applying.   Qualification requirement emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  The nature of this position requires climbing on ladders, scaffolds, and platforms and where surfaces to be coated, or the parts of systems worked on are hard to reach that require considerable standing, stooping, bending, and kneeling. It requires working overhead or in stretched, cramped, awkward, tiring, and uncomfortable positions for extended periods of time. Frequently lifts and carries items up to 40 pounds unassisted.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:  Work is performed inside and outside. Outside work exposes the employee to inclement weather, which includes, heat, cold, rain, and wind. Work entails frequent exposure to dirt, dust, and fumes may be present. Tasks require the employee to work under structures and on scaffolding, ladders, rooftops, and poles. Worker is subject to cuts, abrasions, and insect bites and wearing protective equipment and clothing that are sometimes heavy and uncomfortable.
