Salary listed above is Federal BASE Salary.  Actual salary will vary depending on location and applicability of the Special Salary Rate Table.


Computer Scientist at the GS 13/14 level in the FBI work is to leverage expert specialized computer science knowledge and skills for the identification, investigation and analysis of a variety of unusual conditions and problems, and implementation of rigorous analytical solutions in furtherance of FBI mission.

The qualifications listed below are in addition to the Basic Requirements previously described.

GS 13: Must have one (1) year specialized experience equivalent to GS 12 grade level.

              • Performs advanced computer system and network procurement, installation, administration and security, and assists other on more complex matters

              • Uses, troubleshoots, and modifies existing cyber tools and methods to identify, preserve, and analyze digital evidence

              • Identifies, develops, vets, and implements new tools and methods

              • Provides advanced technical and other professional assistance in conducting interviews, searches and other investigative activity

              • Coordinates with the private sector and other divisions to lead in the resolution of technical and other relevant issues

              • Acts as a subject matter expert, and testifies as such in court

              • Remains current with major new advances in cyber and technology topics and provides guidance, tools, and methods on addressing these advances at the National level


GS 14: In addition to the above duties of the GS 13, applicants must also possess:

              • Mentors lower level employees

              • Researches and identifies training to address emerging threats

              • Builds virtual computing environments and isolated analysis networks

              • Performs testing and application of technical and analytical innovations and new information processing models

Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the above requirements, provided you can show that the foreign education is comparable to that received in an accredited educational institution in the United States.


BASIC REQUIREMENTS: All applicants must have a bachelor's degree in Computer Science or bachelor's degree with 30 semester hours in a combination of mathematics, statistics, AND computer science. (15 of the 30 semester hours MUST have been in any combination of statistics and mathematics that included differential and integral calculus.) Courses designed to provide an introduction to computer science techniques and methodologies are acceptable; courses in teaching elementary, business, or shop mathematics are not acceptable.


The Computer Scientist position requires all personnel hired to attend the Computer Scientist Field Operations Training (CS-FOT) course that lasts up to 8 weeks in duration.  During the training the employee will be staying in one of the dorm facilities located at The FBI Training Academy at Quantico, VA.  Meals will be provided during the training course.  
Unless an employee has attended the FBI's Onboarding New Employees (ONE) training, HE/SHE will be required to attend that as well.   Attendance is mandatory and will make the total training (ONE and CS-FOT) 9 weeks.

Candidates are ineligible to apply if currently on a Performance Improvement Plan (PIP); a Letter of Requirement (LOR); or have failed a PIP or LOR and are currently awaiting the final action by HRD.

A Performance Improvement Plan (PIP) is a 90-day written developmental plan for an employee whose performance on one or more critical elements is rated "Unacceptable".

A Letter of Requirement (LOR) is issued when a supervisor identifies leave abuse and/or when frequent absences negatively impact operations of an office.
