This position(s) is a full-time TEMPORARY appointment, not-to-exceed six months.  The appointment is expected to provide full-time, 40 hours per week employment late-April 2014 through late-October 2014.  Positions will be duty stationed at Berlin, Maryland or Chincoteague, Virginia.  Appointments may be terminated at any time, may be extended, or work schedule may be changed to part-time or intermittent (work only as needed) depending on funding and work availability.

Performs simple and routine work involved in the maintenance and repair of grounds, exterior structures, buildings and related utilities, requiring the use of a variety of trade practices associated with occupations such as carpentry, masonry, plumbing, electrical, painting, cement work, and other related trades.  Assist higher graded maintenance workers or journeymen level personnel in the performance of their work.  Operates light trucks to pick up supplies and to transport materials to and from work sites.  Cleans and services chemical toilets, restrooms, and other campground or visitor facilities. 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  Works from ladders, scaffolds, and platforms and where surfaces to be coated, or the parts of systems worked on are hard to reach and that may require incumbent to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions.  Frequently lifts, carries, and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 40 pounds.

WORKING CONDITIONS:  Work is performed inside and outside where dirt, spray, and fumes are present.  Also required to work in inclement weather and/or wear protective equipment and clothing that are sometimes heavy and uncomfortable.

POSITION LOCATION:  Assateague Island National Seashore is located on the eastern coast of Maryland and Virginia, approximately 130 miles east of Washington, DC.  The area is largely rural, with numerous small towns and the seaside resorts of Ocean City, MD and Chincoteague, VA nearby.  Shopping and medical services are available as are public and private schools.  The small city of Salisbury, MD is about 30 miles west of the headquarters area and has shopping centers, a university, and a large hospital.  Summers are hot and humid, with high temperatures commonly in the 90s.  Winters are mild with daytime temperatures usually above freezing.  Please visit Assateague Island National Seashore for more information.

Applicants must have general experience related to the major duties of this position as described above.  Your experience and training must have provided you with the following job elements:

  • Ability to perform the work of a Maintenance Worker, WG-4749-05 without more than normal supervision (screen-out).
  • Skill and ability assisting higher graded workers in a variety of building maintenance duties.
  • Skill and ability to safely perform a variety of grounds maintenance duties.
  • Skill and ability to safely perform custodial/janitorial duties and ability to work safely.

Full-time and part-time TEMPORARY employees are generally entitled to earn and use sick leave and annual leave and entitled to holiday pay according to regulation; temporary employees are not entitled to health/life insurance benefits.


Conditions of Employment:

  • This a TEMPORARY position/appointment not to exceed 6 months of work in a service year.  The appointment may be shortened or extended depending upon agency funding and available work.
  • Anticipated work period is late-April 2014 through late-October 2014.
  • Work schedules will be other than Monday through Friday; weekend, holiday, and occassional night and/or overtime work will be required.
  • Required to possess and maintain a valid State Driver's License.
