To qualify for this position you must meet the following:
A. Degree: that included 15 semester hours in statistics
(or in mathematics and statistics, provided at least 6 semester hours were in
statistics), and 9 additional semester hours in one or more of the following :
physical or biological sciences, medicine, education ,or engineering; or in the
social sciences including demography, history, economics, social welfare,
geography, international relations, social or cultural anthropology, health
sociology, political science, public administration, psychology, etc. Credit toward meeting statistical course
requirements should be given for courses in which 50 percent of the course
content appears to be statistical methods, e.g., courses that included studies
in research methods in psychology or economics such as tests and measurements
or business cycles, or courses in methods of processing mass statistical data
such as tabulating methods or electronic data processing.
B. Combination of education and
experience courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or
additional education. The experience
should have included a full range of professional statistical work such as (a)
sampling, (b) collecting, computing, and analyzing statistical data, and (c)
applying statistical techniques such as measurement of central tendency,
dispersion, skewness, sampling error, simple and multiple correlation, analysis
of variance, and tests of significance.
EXPERIENCE: In addition to
meeting the basic requirements of A or B above; You must have one year of
Specialized Experience that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills,
and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is
typically in or related to the work of a Statistician (Medicine). To be creditable, specialized experience must
have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the normal line
or progression of a Statistician (Medicine).
Specialized experience includes applying the theories, principles,
methods and techniques of statistics, especially those applicable to the area
of clinical trials and/or epidemiological studies; using Statistical Analysis Systems
(SAS) software packages; choosing, writing, and processing the appropriate
statistical programs for the analysis of study data; assisting in the
production of the required statistical data reports for committees and
publication; and preparing interim and final statistical reports for clinical
You will be rated on the following Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and
Other characteristics (KSAOs) as part of the assessment questionnaire for the
Knowledge of statistical theory and clinical
Knowledge of programming techniques and
statistical software packages.
Skill in the collection and analyses of large
data sets and preparation of statistical reports.
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The
work of this position is mostly sedentary; however, some walking between
offices located on three different floors in the same building and two
satellite locations is required.

Applicants will be ranked based on four quality groups, as follows:
- Best qualified - applicants possessing experience that substantially exceeds the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors, and who are highly proficient in all requirements of the job and can perform effectively in the position;
- Highly qualified - applicants possessing experience that exceeds the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors, and who are proficient in most of the requirements of the job;
- Well qualified - applicants possessing experience that meets the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors, and who are proficient in some, but not all, of the requirements of the job; and
- Qualified - applicants possessing experience and/or education that meets the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors.
After the vacancy announcement closes, reviewed applications are evaluated against the questionnaire responses and placed in the appropriate quality group. Qualified veterans will be afforded preference by being placed at the top of the appropriate quality group.
