Incumbent serves as an Economist performing the following duties:

  • Manage the formulation, programming and guidance of projects or continuing programs involving economic issues of great importance and significance
  • Develop and present for review new ideas for analysis and presentation of economic data
  • Develop, create, and disseminate analytic tools and data derived from administrative or discharge level datasets for rapidly assessing and tracking cost and efficiency
  • Participate in or lead interagency work groups as related to economic research
  • Promote and disseminate the findings of the research conducted or facilitated, to ensure the evidence is understood and applied in health care settings
  • Prepare statistical tabulations and analyses in formats easily understood by policymakers, the media, and the general public

Basic Qualification Requirements:

A. Have at least a bachelor's degree in economics, that included at least 21 semester hours in economics and 3 semester hours in statistics, accounting, or calculus.


B. Have a combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in economics, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Additional Qualification Requirements: In addition to meeting the Basic Qualification Requirements candidates must also:

Have one year of specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-13 grade level in the Federal service, conducting complex economic research on health care cost, quality, and access to care; developing analytical techniques for health economic studies; conducting special analyses of major health economic issues; writing, editing, planning, and coordinating major reports or journal articles on health economic issues; conducting and overseeing health economic studies; and developing and disseminating analytic tools for use with complex health care administrative or discharge databases.


Foreign Education:  If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show that the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.  For further information, visit:
