The Space Weather Prediction Center is the Nation’s official source of space weather alerts and warnings. The Center continually monitors and forecasts Earth’s space environment; provides accurate, reliable and useful solar-terrestrial information; and leads programs to improve services. Operational and development activities cover time scales ranging from seconds to decades. 

Extensive real-time data services operated and maintained by the Center are applied directly to the routine forecasting of solar events and space weather. The Center is the national and international focal point for current information concerning the solar-terrestrial environment and supplies this information as a continuing service to a wide variety of users throughout the world.

  • The Director, Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC), has responsibility for the direction of the scientific, technical, and administrative functions of the Space weather prediction Center. The incumbent oversees the responsibilities for providing real-time space environment monitoring, forecast and warning services. Conducts applied research to develop models and techniques necessary for forecasting solar disturbances and their subsequent effects on Earth’s environment.
  • Additionally, the incumbent is responsible for the planning functions of the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Space Weather Program. The incumbent will participate in and provide leadership to interagency and international programs addressing current and future space weather research and services.
     
  • The Director, SWPC formulates goals and policies for the Center; by planning its objectives and activities, both with respect to continuing programs and by establishing new lines of services and research. The Director, SWPC represents NOAA and the Department of Commerce to the Executive Office of the President and the Congress.

Degree Requirement:

  1. Degree: physics; or related degree that included at least 24 semester hours in physics.

    or

  2. Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in physics totaling at least 24 semester hours, plus appropriate experience or additional education.


In either A or B above, the courses must have included a fundamental course in general physics and, in addition, courses in any two of the following: electricity and magnetism, heat, light, mechanics, modern physics, and sound.

HOW YOU WILL BE EVALUATED:

All applicants will be evaluated to determine the degree to which they possess the mandatory executive core and professional/technical qualifications. To be rated and considered for this position, applicants MUST fully describe their experience in each of the following five (5) Executive Core Qualifications (ECQs) and in each of the Professional/Technical Qualifications (PTQs). ECQ and PTQ documentation should be attached under "Writing Example One" and "Writing Example Two", respectively. When addressing the ECQ and PTQ requirements, please use the first person as you assess and describe your leadership qualifications. SES Executive Core Qualifications:
ECQ1. Leading Change: This core qualification involves the ability to bring about strategic change, both within and outside the organization, to meet organizational goals. Inherent to this ECQ is the ability to establish an organizational vision and to implement it in a continuously changing environment.
ECQ 2. Leading People: This core qualification involves the ability to lead people toward meeting the organization's vision, mission, and goals. Inherent to this ECQ is the ability to provide an inclusive workplace that fosters the development of others, facilitates cooperation and teamwork, and supports constructive resolution of conflicts.
ECQ 3. Results Driven: This core qualification involves the ability to meet organizational goals and customer expectations. Inherent to this ECQ is the ability to make decisions that produce high-quality results by applying technical knowledge, analyzing problems, and calculating risks.
ECQ 4. Business Acumen: This core qualification involves the ability to manage human, financial, and information resources strategically.
ECQ 5. Building Coalitions: This core qualification involves the ability to build coalitions internally and with other Federal agencies, State and local governments, nonprofit and private sector organizations, foreign governments, or international organizations to achieve common goals.

Professional/Technical Core Qualifications (PTQ):
 
1. A broad understanding and knowledge of solar, interplanetary, magnetospheric, ionospheric, lower atmospheric physics, in order to establish, direct, and evaluate theoretical and experimental research studies of a complex nature.
2. Experience in and a broad understanding of real-time data base management and data analysis in order to make sound decisions relative to the performance of real time space environment service.
3. Demonstrated experience and skill in performing research with particular emphasis on the solar-terrestrial environment, and publish significant research findings in referred literature.
