NAVSEA's Warfare Center Enterprise is comprised of the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) and the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC). With eight Surface Warfare and two Undersea Warfare sites across the United States, the Warfare Centers supply the technical operations, people, technology, engineering services and products needed to equip and support the fleet and meet the warfighters' needs. The Warfare Centers are the Navy's principal research, development, test and evaluation (RDT&E) assessment activity for surface ship and submarine systems and subsystems. In addition, the Warfare Centers provide depot maintenance and in-service engineering support to ensure the systems fielded today perform consistently and reliably in the future.


Strategic Systems Programs (SSP) is an Echelon II Command and the Navy’s only Direct Reporting Program Manager, responsible for every aspect of the life of the strategic weapons system. SSP is one of only a few major organizations within the DON with true cradle-to-grave responsibility (from concept, design, and development to production, deployment and disposal). SSP’s highly specialized workforce is located in offices through the United States and includes an additional office in the United Kingdom. The SSP headquarters office is located in Washington, DC. The two Strategic Weapons Facilities (SWFs) located in Bangor, WA and Kings Bay, GA provide assembly, storage, checkout and technical engineering services of the weapons systems. The Program management Offices (PMOs) located in Sunnyvale, CA and Pittsfield, MA are responsible for the life-cycle support for the sea-based weapons systems programs, and provide technical and program management expertise, respectively. Our program office in Cape Canaveral, FL supports in-flight testing.


This is a student internship appointment.  Upon completion of requirements for graduation and successful completion of the internship, the appointee may become eligible for non-competitive conversion, at the agency’s discretion, to a term or permanent position in the competitive service.


Positions may be in one of the following disciplines: Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or Structural Engineering.

The purpose of the Pathways Intern Program is a work experience that provides an opportunity for college students to pursue work that is relevant and beneficial to their academic studies.  Work assignments are of limited scope and complexity, designed to assist the trainee in developing a basic understanding of engineering practices and procedures and to develop familiarity with simple test equipment.  Trainees provide assistance to higher level personnel performing routine tasking.


The program is an excellent opportunity for college undergraduate students to get an interesting, real-world experience in the field of engineering while contributing to the defense of our nation.

Navy STEM Scholarship Internship Program Requirements: Must be able to work a minimum work requirement of 16 weeks (640 hours) prior to graduation.  Must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.  For students seeking an associate’s degree, academic criteria must be transferable to a four-year college or university, and students must intend, upon completion of the associate’s degree, to transfer to a four-year college or university to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or Structural Engineering.

Benefits and Work Schedule: Work schedules may be full or part-time at the discretion of the hiring manager.  Student is eligible to earn annual and sick leave, health and life insurance, and retirement benefits.

Financial Support: Up to $15,000 for tuition, fees, and books per year.  Salary at grade level based upon completion of a specific number of academic years.  Payment of travel between duty station and school may be authorized according to Duty Station policy and availability of funds.

Salary Increases: Based on completion of academic semester hours and approved by management.

Conditions of Employment: Reporting dates are flexible; however, most students start work at the end of the May/June timeframe following the completion of their spring semester.  Applicants who have dual citizenship with the United States and any other country cannot be appointed.  Applicants with dual citizenship must renounce their citizenship in the foreign country.  All positions will require a secret security clearance.

Student Obligation: Work for employing field activity for period of time equivalent to the time for which financial aid received.  The service obligation must be paid back after support is received and after successful completion of the degree program.  If student resigns or fails to continue employment with employing field activity, then the student is obligated to repay a prorated portion of the aid received.  In the event the employing field activity is unable to convert the student due to administrative reasons (budget constraints, lack of work) the student will not be held liable for the financial aid received and will voluntarily resign or be terminated.

Program Completion and Conversion:


Interns may be converted to a permanent position within 120 days of successful completion of the program.


To be eligible for conversion Interns must:


Ø  Completed a minimum work requirement of 640 hours prior to graduation.  The 640 hour’s work requirement must be met prior to receiving degree

Ø  Have performed their job successfully and have a favorable recommendation for appointment by an official of the agency in which the Intern served

Ø  Meet qualification standards for the position to which the Intern will be converted

Ø  Meet agency-specific requirements as specified in the Participant’s Agreement

Ø  Be a US Citizen; Complete their degree or certificate requirements

Ø  In addition, students working in agencies through third-party intern providers may count up to 320 of the hours they work toward the 640 hour requirement.

Employing field activity is not obligated to make an offer of employment, nor is the student obligated to accept an offer of employment.

Agencies my waive up to 320 of the required 640 hours of work for Interns who demonstrate high potential as evidenced by outstanding academic achievement and exceptional job performance.

Time spent under previous Internship Program appointments may count towards required work experience.
