This position is located in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention, Office of Pesticide Programs, Health Effects Division in Arlington, VA.

These positions may be filled in three of the seven branches in the Health Effects Division.

You will:

-Examine and evaluate scientific data consistent with project-specific statutory deadlines under the Pesticide Registration Improvement Act (PRIA) and the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA).

-Write detailed scientific evaluations of pesticide exposures. These evaluations should include: judgements as to the reliability of the methods of analysis by which the data were obtained and estimations.

-Conduct exposure analyses for pesticides; including controversial cancer causing chemicals, as input to the Agency's pesticide risk assessment.

You need a degree or combination of education and experience as described below to qualify for this position.

In addition to the educational requirements, we are looking for at least one year of specialized experience related to this position as described below:


To qualify for the GS-09 level, you need to have at least one year of full time experience defined as analyzing statistical/scientific data to assess risks resulting from the use of  chemicals or other toxic substances found in varying environments - OR master's or equivalent graduate degree; or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in one of the academic disciplines as described below.

Your answers to the on-line assessment will be used to evaluate your competencies in the following areas:  1) Skill in using standard data gathering and analysis techniques to support the development of pesticide risk assessments; 2) Skill in oral communication; 3) Skill in written communication; 3) Knowledge of the methods of analysis used to estimate exposure to pesticides; 4) Skill in reviewing and analyzing technical documentation; and 5) Ability to develop pesticide risk assessments.


BIOLOGIST
You must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited or pre-accredited college or university in one of the following: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position; OR a combination of education and experience with courses equivalent to a major, as listed.
CHEMIST
You must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited or pre-accredited college or university in one of the following: physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics; OR a combination of education and experience with education equivalent to one of the majors listed that included the described course work.
INDUSTRIAL HYGIENIST
You must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited or pre-accredited college or university in industrial hygiene; or a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene.

This position is designated as Low Risk and requires a background investigation. Unless an appropriate background investigation is already on record with the Office of Personnel Management, you must undergo a background investigation.

If you are selected, you must complete a one year probationary period.
