Summary

The Bureau of Indian Affairs is the lead agency for the United States in carrying on a government-to-government relationship and carry out the responsibility to protect and improve the trust assets of American Indians, Indian tribes and Alaska Natives.

Established in 1824, Indian Affairs is the oldest bureau of the U.S. Department of the Interior.  Within the government-to-government relationship, Indian Affairs provides services directly or through contracts, grants, or compacts to 566 federally recognized tribes with a service population of about 1.9 million American Indians and Alaska Natives.  Indian Affairs is seeking individuals who share a passion for our country's most valuable resources and a commitment to obtaining, training and retaining a highly skilled and diverse workforce needed to accomplish our exciting and challenging mission.

INDIAN PREFERENCEPreference in filling vacancies is given to qualified Indian candidates in accordance with the Indian Preference Act of 1934 (Title 25, USC, Section 472).  Verification Form BIA-4432 must be submitted with the application if claiming Indian Preference.  Indian preference eligibles that are not currently employed in the Federal service will be appointed under the Excepted Service Appointment Authority Schedule A, 213.3112(A) (7).

FORMER FEDERAL EMPLOYEES: Former federal employees are required to indicate whether they received a Voluntary Separation Incentive Payment (VSIP) buyout in their previous employment with the Federal government, and are required to submit a copy of the applicable Notification of Personnel Action (SF-50) regarding the VSIP. The majority of individuals, who accept reemployment with the Federal government within 5 years of receiving the VSIP amount, must repay the gross amount of the separation pay prior to reemployment.

Duties

As a Social Worker, you will; 

  • Develop and improve services aimed at Child Welfare and Family Services.
  • Receive complaints and conducts investigation through home visits and personal interviews.
  • Serve on the Child Protection Team as case manager.
  • Recruits foster parents, develop, evaluate, train and recommend for approval.
  • Works with Tribal Higher Education Programs to identify those children are are in need and eligible for admission to Federal boarding schools.

  • Required for home site visits, and some are off reservation visits.
