JOB SUMMARY:

Civilian employees serve a vital role in supporting the Army mission. They provide the skills that are not readily available in the military, but crucial to support military operations. The Army integrates the talents and skills of its military and civilian members to form a Total Army.

About the Position:
Located in the scenic Hudson River valley, only 50 miles from New York City, the U.S. Military Academy at West Point is a four-year academic institution, a nationally-renowned historic site, and the oldest continuously occupied military post in America. The undergraduates, known as cadets, are commissioned as officers in the US Army upon graduation. You can watch them on parade or competing as intercollegiate athletes in a widerange of sports events. As a military installation, West Point is a small, self-contained city with housing for the military stationed here in support of the Academy, a Department of Public Works to maintain the roads, grounds and facilities, two libraries(Academic and Community), a military hospital, fire department, chapels, restaurants. West Point's 3,000 civilian employees have access to Eisenhower Hall Theatre, the Hudson Valley's premiere performing arts center, and to recreational facilities such as an 18-hole Golf Course and Ski Slope.

As an Assistant Professor, you will teach undergraduate courses in the Department of Behavioral Science and Leadership.The department is inter-disciplinary offering majors in Psychology, Engineering Psychology, Management, Leadership, and Sociology.  You will design, teach, and administer undergraduate courses, and mentor students' academic and extracurricular development.  You will support the personal growth and development of cadets in and out of the classroom, as a role model for future leaders of the Nation.

This is a full time term appointment in the excepted service not to exceed 3 years starting on or about June 2014.

 

SALARY: Competitive salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

 

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must (a) hold a bachelors degree or higher that included or was supplemented by major study in education or in a subject matter field appropriate to the position OR (b) possess a combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in education, or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position, plus appropriate experience or additional course work that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study described above.

 

SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTORS/KNOWLEDGE SKILLSAND ABILITIES (KSAs): Applicants will be evaluated on the following: 1) Academic Accomplishment (a Ph.D is strongly preferred) specializing in experimental, cognitive or social/organizational psychology, or closely related discipline; 2) Ability to teach undergraduate courses in a Psychology program including introductory psychology and advanced courses in social, developmental, and research methods/statistics (classroom teaching experience at the college level preferred); 3) Ability to conduct academic research in the field of psychology and provide evidence of a personal research agenda in that field; 4) Ability to mentor students, direct them in their individual, application-oriented research projects, and support student activities outside the classroom; and 5) Ability to design and assess courses and to work cooperatively with other faculty who teach an integrated curriculum.
