The Medical Support Assistant is assigned to the Mental Health Initiative Program for the Behavioral Health Care Line at the VA Medical Center in Syracuse, NY.  The Advanced MSA works collaboratively in an interdisciplinary coordinated patient care delivery model (Patient Aligned Care Team - PACT).  Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Coordinating with the patient care team to review the clinic utilization by using various reports.
  • Ensures the clinic setup is closely monitored to effectively support the clinic needs.
  • Communicate effectively and efficiently with patients, interdisciplinary team, VA staff and other customers.
  • Notify patients of normal lab results.
  • Develop and manage a tracking system for follow-up care.
  • Participates in team huddles and team meetings to manage and plan patient care.
  • Enters appropriate information into the patient's electronic medical record.
  • Manages electronic wait list.
  • Serves as receptionist for the clinic.
  • Monitors pre-appointment requirements to assure readiness for patient visit/procedure.
  •  Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Tour of Duty:  Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:   

  • U.S. citizenship. 
  • English Language Proficiency

EXPERIENCE: (1) full year of specialized experience that equipped the candidate with the particular knowledge, skill, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the Medical Support Assistant, GS-6 position, and that is in or related to the work of the position to be filled.  To be creditable, this experience (Federal or non-Federal) must have been equivalent to at least the GS-5 level in the Federal service to qualify at the Grade 6.  Examples of specialized experience would include - coordinating with patient care team to review clinic utilization by preparing and utilizing various reports; ensure clinic setup is closely monitored to effectively support the needs of the clinic and make necessary adjustments; develop and maintain effective and efficient communication with patients, clinical team and others having contact with the clinic; notifying patients of normal lab results; developing and managing tracking systems for follow-up care such as consults and tests; participate in team meetings; setting priorities and deadlines and adjusting work flow to meet team and patient needs; enter information into the patient's electronic medical record, monitoring pre-appointment requirements to ensure patient readiness; managing electronic wait list; collaborates with team to ensure continuity of care; participates and provides input into in problem solving on operational issues or procedures; and performing administrative follow-up action. 

There is no educational substitution for specialized experience at the MSA GS-6 grade level.

  1. Ability to collaborate, communicate, set priorities and organize work in order to meet deadlines; ensuring compliance with established processes, policies and regulations.
  2. Skill in the operation of computerized software programs and databases in order to enter, modity, retrieve information/data and prepare reports.
  3. Knowledge of managing a patient care clinic, medical terminology, and policies and procedures associated with operational activities that affect the patient flow, paatient care and the revenue process.

There is no education substitution for experience for the Medical Support Assistant position at the GS-6 grade level.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: As a Medical Support Assistant, the major part of your work day will be sitting at a desk with occasional standing and walking to greet customers and perform office duties such as copying and delivering items.  You may lift and carry lift objects, work closely with others, and use hands/fingers to enter and retrieve data from computer system.  The successful completed of a pre-employment physical exam is required.
