PATHWAY INTERNSHIP PROGRAM OVERVIEW:  The Pathways Internship Program is designed to provide students enrolled in a wide variety of educational institutions, from high school to graduate level, with paid work opportunities in agencies to explore Federal careers while still in school.  The Internship provides manager's a ready source of student employees and potential permanent employees upon completion of the program requirements.  It also provides the student with work experience directly related to the curriculum studies or career goals while offering eligibility for non-competitive conversion to permanent employment upon completion.

CONVERSION: This appointment may be extended until the selectee's education program requirements have been completed, at which time the individual may, at agency's discretion, be converted to a term or permanent appointment.  There is no guarantee for conversion.

Who May Apply: To be eligible for the Pathways Internship program, the individual must have been accepted for enrollment or be enrolled and seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) in a qualifying educational institution on a full or half time basis (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED)

This position for a student intern is located in our Health Services Research & Development (HSR&D) section, Research Service at the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center.  NOTE: This position has a NTE date of 1 yr but can be extended so long as funding is available and requirements of the pathways program are met. The incumbent in this position will provide administrative support to Center of Excellence (COE) investigators, the COE Administrative Officer and will have frequent contact with the senior staff of the COE along with other research administrators at the medical center. Specific duties related to the position will include the following:

·        Receives, schedules, refers, and contacts members of the staff, and/or agency as directed.

·        Assist in editing and composing letters and reports.

·        Maintaining departmental manuals, simple databases, and developing standards or form letters.

·        Preparing written descriptions of center projects for the web page or updating the web page with approved text and graphical files.

·        Provides timely and courteous service to external and internal customers.

·        Ability to communicate with a wide variety of people in writing and orally.

·        Ability to use personal computers, automated office equipment such as printers, fax machines, scanners, paper shredders, and variety of computer software programs (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access, etc.).

·        Ability to plan effectively, set priorities and coordinate activities with established deadlines

 

Work Schedule: Part time, availability to work 15-30 hours per week. Schedule can be between the hours of 6:00am - 6:00pm

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement AND be currently accepted for enrollment or enrolled and seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) in a qualifying educational institution on a full or half-time basis as defined by the institution in which you are enrolled (Transcripts required)

Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is not a requirement for this position. 

To qualify, applicants must have successfully completed a four (4) year degree program that has lead to a bachelor's degree (Transcripts with degree conferred date required)

AND

Must be currently enrolled in a qualifying educational institution. (Transcripts with current enrollment required)

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The work in this position is primarily sedentary. Typically the employee will sit comfortably and do the work. There may be some walking and/or standing, bending, and carrying of light items like paper or books. No special physical demands are required to perform the work. On occasion, the incumbent may be required to walk or ride in an automobile to various locations on and around the university campus.

  • Length of appointment and termination date;
  • Mentorship opportunities;
  • Training requirements;
  • Evaluation procedures that will be used for the participant;
  • Requirements for continuation and successful completion of the Program;
  • Minimum eligibility requirements for noncompetitive conversion to term or permanent appointment in the competitive service under the specific Pathways Program in which employed; and
  • Any other requirements or expectations established by the agency.

HOW YOU WILL BE EVALUATED:

Students hired under an Internship/Recent Graduate or PMF appointment for a period expected to last longer than 1 year are eligible for health and life insurance coverage as long as they are expected to be employed under this appointment for over 1 year and are expected to be in a pay status for at least one-third of the total period of time from the date of their initial appointment to the date of the completion of the Program. The cost of premiums is split between the employee and the agency, as it is for all permanent

employees. (See 5 CFR 870.202 for life insurance and 5 CFR 890.102 for health benefits.)
