The Geropsychologist at VA Butler Healthcare is primarily responsible for mental health care for the two 30-bed units of the Community Living Center. Regular consultation with nursing staff, nurse managers, recreation therapy staff, social work, dietary, medicine, and psychiatry is a core part of this position.

One unit is a secure unit housed in a new building where each veteran has their own room. Veterans on this unit have a variety of needs including dementia care, schizophrenia, PTSD, and Parkinson's disease. Co-morbid mood and anxiety disorders, including adjustment to long-term care are commonly encountered. The secure unit has in place a mood and behavior tracking system for monitoring the well being of veterans with dementia who present with mood and behavioral disturbances, in addition to tracking any changes in veteran's without dementia. There is an ongoing opportunity to develop and administer brief educational programs to nursing staff about a wide variety of topics such as management of disruptive behaviors related to dementia, depression, anxiety, etc. The other 30-bed unit is a mixture of short-term rehabilitation, intensive rehabilitation, and skilled care. This unit will soon be moving to a new building currently under construction. The geropsychologist's role on this unit is similar to other in terms of consultation, also adding great opportunity for brief assessments and interventions for veteran's receiving care for a variety of illnesses.

Hospice care is provided on both units and in consultation with the facility's Palliative Care Coordinator. There is a great opportunity to work with multidisciplinary staff in hospice rounds, palliative care and hospice team meetings, and in staff education regarding end of life issues.

There is also an opportunity to provide outpatient geriatric neuropsychological assessment, if that is congruent with the incumbent's experience and training. Work schedule will be primarily Monday thru Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with some evenings required.
