About the Position: Pine Flat Lake provides recreation opportunities for hundreds of thousands of visitors annually. Pine Flat Dam is an impressive structure which impounds the waters of the Kings River. Construction of the 429-foot tall dam was completed in 1954. Today, Pine Flat continues to provide flood control and irrigation benefits to the San Joaquin Valley. A hydroelectric plant was completed in 1984. At maximum capacity, the lake holds 1,000,000 acre feet of water.

Position(s) will be filled under the Department of the Army Pathways Intern Program.

The Department of the Army Pathways Internship Program is designed to provide students currently enrolled in a wide variety of educational institutions, from high school to graduate level, with opportunities to work and get paid while exploring federal careers through a job with the Department of Army.

Serves as a Student Trainee (Laborer) assisting the maintenance staff with the routine duties required to operate and maintain the recreational and flood control facilities to which the employee is assigned. Employee works under the general supervision of the Park Manager and receives assignments from higher graded Maintenance Workers. Familiar assignments are assigned with general instructions and without explicit detail.  Explicit instructions are provided on special, unfamiliar or unusual assignments.  Independently completes assignments, consulting a higher graded Maintenance Worker when unexpected technical or personal contact problems are encountered.

Performs a variety of routine maintenance and upkeep duties at the project to which assigned.  The following are examples of duties you will be performing in order to maintain the flood control facility in a constant state of readiness and enhance the park’s resources to provide a quality natural environmental experience for the visiting public: mowing lawns, clearing weeds, clearing or pruning trees, moving and arranging outdoor furniture, raking leaves, emptying refuse cans, removing debris from public grounds, and servicing restrooms.  You will also assist maintenance workers with maintenance and repairing boat launching ramps, restroom buildings, water supply systems, exhibits, trails, fences, firebreaks, picnic tables and benches.  You will use a variety of hands tools and power tools to perform these duties.

I have the ability to perform the duties of this position without more than normal supervision. The duties are:  performing basic and repetitive manual laboring tasks associated with grounds and facilities management receiving specific and continuous supervision from a supervisor or higher graded employee.  I am able to perform simple manual labor tasks such as cleaning office spaces and restrooms, and grounds maintenance tasks such as to keep lawns, picnic areas, playgrounds and/or trails neat and orderly.  I have the ability to operate equipment such as heavy power mowers, power trimmers, power edgers, powered weed-eaters and/or related hand tools to perform grounds maintenance work.

Work practices (includes keeping things neat, clean and in order).
Ability to interpret instructions, specifications etc. (other than blueprints).
Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment.
Dexterity and safety.

Possession of or ability to obtain and maintain a state Driver's License.
Possession of or ability to obtain and maintain a Corps of Engineers Boat Operator's License.

Lifts, carries, loads, unloads and moves materials, supplies and equipment frequently weighing over 50 pounds, running power mowers on grades or pushing heavy wheelbarrow loads of cement. Is required to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Occasionally works from ladders, scaffolds or platforms.

Work is performed inside and outside in all types of weather (hot, cold, wind, etc).  Employee is exposed to a variety of pests and insects with the possibility of bites.  Employee is subject to strain from lifting, broken bones, cuts, bruises, scrapes and falls from ladders.  Occasionally is required to wear uncomfortable protective clothing.
