Work involves the maintenance, repair, and modification of heavy duty vehicles and mobile equipment which have utility systems or special hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical, electrical, or electronic systems, features, or controls designed for such purposes as construction, combat, earth moving, ship loading, firefighting, and comparable industrial or special applications. Examples of heavy duty equipment include bulldozers, road graders, crawler tractors, power shovels, locomotives, combat tanks, cranes, large missile transporters, and fire trucks. The repair of major systems (such as diesel, gasoline, multi-fuel, and turbine engines; automatic, standard, and cross-drive transmissions; heavy duty drive line systems; and hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical utility systems) is included, whether accomplished as part of or apart from repair of the total piece of heavy mobile equipment involved.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE

WG-08 – 12 months of experience using common hand and power tools and a small variety of test and measurement devices to make mechanical repairs. Experience, education or training which demonstrates knowledge of equipment to be able to do routine jobs, simple preventative maintenance tasks, and is able to use common tools and equipment in the line of work. Experience removing, adjusting, replacing, cleaning, and installing a variety of parts, components, and accessories. Experience which demonstrates a basic understanding of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic theory applying to vehicles; and skill to replace, fit, install, and make adjustments. Experience demonstrating an understanding of the makeup and operation of the various individual systems maintained and their interrelationships. Experience reading and interpreting parts lists, manufactures’ repair manuals, diagrams, and electrical schematics.

 OR

WG-10 – 18 months experience demonstrating ability to diagnose, repair, overhaul, and modify heavy mobile equipment, systems, and vehicles. Experience, education or training that has provided the candidate with the skill to make repairs or the ability to assist with repairs that can be accomplished by removing, adjusting, or replacing defective or worn parts.  Experience which provided a thorough knowledge of the mechanical makeup, operation, and working relationships of heavy duty systems, assemblies, and parts. Experience must also have provided knowledge of mechanical, electrical, electronic, hydraulic, pneumatic and other non-mechanical systems.  

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSA's):  In the event there are more than 10 certified applicants the following knowledge, skills and abilities will be used to determine the best qualified applicants from which selection will be made.

1. Knowledge of the mechanical makeup, operation, and working relationships of complex systems, assemblies, and parts for a variety of combat, tactical, commercial, special purpose vehicles and equipment.

2. Ability to diagnose, repair, overhaul, and modify a variety of combat, tactical, commercial, special purpose vehicles and equipment.

3. Ability to repair or overhaul major components such as diesel, multi-fuel or gasoline engines, turbine engines, automatic and manual transmissions, etc.

4.  Skill to use a wide variety of test and diagnostics equipment to perform fault isolation and conduct repair of combat, tactical, commercial, special purpose vehicles and equipment. 

5.  Ability to utilize, interpret and apply parts list, manufacturer’s repair manuals, technical manuals, diagrams, engineering drawings, diagnostic computer information, and schematics.

MILITARY REQUIREMENTS: Selected candidates will be required to be in a compatible military grade and assignment prior to the effective date of placement.

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:  Study successfully completed in a college, university, technical or vocational school may be substituted for experience at the rate of one year of study (30 semester hours or 20 classroom hours of instruction per week) for 6 months of experience. Courses must be directly related to the work of the position.

 

Copies of OFFICIAL transcripts and/or military training certificates must be submitted with the application to receive credit for education.
