POSITION NUMBER: 6063-O

WORK SCHEDULE:  MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY - 8:00AM TO 4:30PM

NOTE: This appointment is in the Excepted Service under Title 38 authority for research positions. This appointment is non-status, non-permanent and does not confer eligibility to be noncompetitively converted to a career-conditional or career appointment. The duration of the appointment is not to exceed (NTE) 13 months; however, it may be reduced/or extended depending upon research project funding.

 The incumbent will function as a lead research assistant (Clinical Research Coordinator) in the Cardiology Service and coordinate a research study examining whether a home-based exercise program, effective in cardiac patiens, will improve cardiopulmonary function and muscle mass and function in elderly patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) requiring maintenance hemodialysis (MHD).

Duties include but may not be limited to the following:

  • Responsible for the overall management and implementation of the assigned clinical research protocol in assuring compliance, efficiency, and the safety and well being of trial participants
  • Responsibilities include recruitment, screening, and enrollment of study participants, including the informed consent process
  • Assist in scheduling diagnostic and research evaluation visits
  • Interaction with patients and tracking adherance to protocol-specific therapy
  • Performing study-related assessments  including anthropometric measurements
  • Assist in collection of tissue samples (muscle biopsis and blood), processing and delivery of samples and managing study data
  • Oversee patient compliance to study protocols, obtain information from  patients regarding adverse events
  • Provide data management support for research activities in the Cardiology Service

BASIC REQUIREMENT:

Education: A bachelor's degree (or higher) with the major study in an academic field related to the health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)

This position includes a Selective Placement Factor (skill, knowledge,ability or other worker characteristic basic to - and essential for-satisfactory performance of the job). Selective Placement Factors are a prerequisite to appointment and represent minimum requirements for a position. Applicants who do not meet it are ineligible for further consideration.

The Selective Placement Factor for this position is (Screen-Out):    EXPERIENCE IN CONDUCTING RESEARCH OF KIDNEY, CARDIOVASCULAR AND EXERCISE PHYSIOLOGY AS IT RELATE TO  CLINICAL ASPECTS OF KIDNEY DISEASE. Please provide specific examples of your experience in detailed resume.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:  One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-7 level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is progressively responsible experience, which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and is in or related to the work of the position. Such qualifying experience would include: collect, enter and manage study data; scheduling diagnostic and research evaluation visits; collecting tissue samples; maintaining regulatory documents (IRB, RDIS, etc); coordinating research activities; managing clinical trials; recruiting, screening and enrollment of study participants.

OR

SUBSTITUTION OFEDUCATION: Two (2) year of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or equivalent graduate degree in a major field of study related to the health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)

OR

COMBINATION: A combination of specialized experience and related graduate education as described that demonstrates your ability to perform the duties of the position is fully qualifying at the GS-9 grade level. If you qualify with a combination, your experience must be documented in your application/resume and transcripts are required.

You will be rated on the following Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other characteristics (KSAOs) as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position:

  • Ability and knowledge of cardiovascular research methods and procedure

  • Ability to demonstrate organizational and analytical skills in written and oral communication
  • Knowledge and experience using current software (MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint)

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The work is mainly sedentary with some walking, lifting, pushing and standing. Because the research involves patients with kidney and/or cardiovascular disease, this position occasionally requires the ability to assist patients, if needed, during exercise testing and other evaluations. Some driving to community dialysis clinics required.
