This position is located in the Division of Administration at the George Washington Memorial Parkway (GWMP) in McLean, Virginia.

GWMP preserves the natural scenery along the Potomac River.  It connects the historic sites from Mount Vernon, where Washington lived, past the nation's capital, which he founded, and to the Great Falls of the Potomac where the President demonstrated his skill as an engineer.  Developed as a memorial to George Washington, the Parkway may be used on any day to travel to exciting historical, natural, and recreational areas.

SPECIAL HIRING AUTHORITY CONSIDERATION:  Individuals who are eligible for consideration under special hiring authorities (i.e., 30% compensable veterans, severely handicapped individuals, former Peace Corps and VISTA volunteers, etc.) will be accepted and considered non-competitively for this vacancy.

This position is being filled under the Pathways Internship Program which is designed to provide students enrolled in a wide variety of educational institutions, from high school to graduate level, with paid work opportunities in agencies to explore Federal careers while still in school.

The primary purpose of this position is to provide a variety of duties related to budget formulation and account maintenance.

The anticipated entrance on duty date is February 2014 (IF SELECTED FOR THIS POSITION, YOU MUST BE A STUDENT CURRENTLY ENROLLED OR ACCEPTED FOR ENROLLMENT AT THE TIME OF APPOINTMENT).  This is a non temporary student opportunity in the Excepted Service and the position may be converted to a term or permanent appointment upon completion of incumbent's education program requirements (non-competitive conversion is not guaranteed).

This position has promotion potential to the target grade level of GS-07.  You may be promoted to the next higher grade without further competition when all statutory and regulatory requirements have been met, performance is satisfactory and promotion is recommended by the supervisor.  Promotion to the next higher grade is not guaranteed and is contingent upon the above criteria.

Temporary housing IS NOT available.

The hourly salary range for the GS-05 grade level is $16.33 to $21.22.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is primarily sedentary.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:  Work is performed in an office setting.

Assists in preparation and maintenance of an annual budget.  Adjusts, revises and updates current year operating budget.  Determines and assigns appropriate account information to major projects/activities.  Makes financial reviews throughout the fiscal year, ensuring that allocations are not exceeded and that surpluses or shortages are identified.

Tracks obligations, expenditures, and accounts receivables, and reconciles in-house records with official accounting office reports.  Recognizes errors, researches source of errors, and initiates adjustment documents to correct erroneous entries.  Prepares expenditure transfers and other adjustment vouchers to effect changes to information entered into the official accounting system.

In order to qualify for this position applicants must have successfully completed 4 academic years of post-high school education leading to a bachelor's degree or equivalent degree with specialization in or directly related to the position; OR, One year of specialized experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position as described in this vacancy announcement.  The experience must be related to the work of the position and equivalent to at least the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service; OR, An equivalent combination of education and experience.

In order to be eligible for an appointment under the Pathways Internship Program:

  • You must be a student CURRENTLY enrolled or accepted for enrollment in a degree or certificate program on a full or half-time basis as defined by the institution (certificate program means post-secondary education, in a qualifying educational institution, equivalent to at least one academic year of full-time study that is part of an accredited college-level, technical, trade, vocational, or business school curriculum).

  • Enrollment MUST be with a qualifying educational institution such as a high school or state-approved home school (home school applicants may participate in the Pathways Internship Program as long as he or she is participating in either an accredited home school, or a home school curriculum approved by their State); or accredited technical/vocational/business school; a 2 or 4 year college or university; a graduate or professional school (e.g., law school, medical school); or a post-secondary home school curriculum (applicants enrolled in GED courses and pursuing a GED diploma meet the definition of participant).

  • Applicants must be in good academic standing as described by their institution.

You must continue to meet these eligibility requirements throughout the duration of your appointment under the Pathways Internship Program.
