Note:  The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-13.  The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS-11 to GS-13.  The Professional Standards Board (a peer-review group) will review the selected candidate’s education and experience and recommend the grade and step at which the candidate will be placed.  The salary is based on the grade and step approved for the selected candidate.

WORK SCHEDULE: 8:00 AM- 4:30 PM. You may be required to provide service evenings and weekends as needed.


This position is located at the South Texas Veterans Health Care System in San Antonio, Texas. If you are selected for this position you will serve as the Program Director of an interdisciplinary treatment team and co-leads with the Medical Director the services provided in the SATU/SARRTP program.  The psychologist is responsible for providing clinical program management of the substance abuse residential and outpatient services.  Additionally, the incumbent provides a range of clinical services including assessment, individual and group psychotherapy, consultation, and psycho-education.

Clinical Responsibilities include:

·         Providing a full range of psycho-diagnostic services including the use of psychological testing for veterans, in particular those with substance abuse/dependence issues.

·         In this role, the psychologist also performs psychological evaluation for individuals with substance use disorders for purposes of diagnostic clarification and treatment planning recommendations.  These evaluations employ a comprehensive diagnostic interview, review of available records, collateral contact when available, as well as objective and cognitive test when indicated.

·         Providing a range of therapeutic interventions primarily with individuals with substance abuse/dependence utilizing empirically supported cognitive behavioral modalities, harm reduction strategies, and AA approaches as indicated. 

·         Psychologist consults  with and serves as a resource for other professional personnel concerning the need for and development  of psychological services for substance abuse/dependence.
