The technicians hired for these positions will support the Outpatient clinic activities at the Jamaica Plain campus of VA BHS. The successful candidate will have IV room experience, both hazardous and non-hazardous and Outpatient Pharmacy experience is a plus. Duties will include a busy outpatient Pharmacy, utilizing state of the art automation in support of both Primary Care as well as specialty clinics. The Technician will be assigned to a varying list of duties to include but not limited to; IV preparation utilizing USP 797 techniques, filling ward stock for clinic areas, daily maintenance of Omnicell point of care automation, interfacing with patients in the Outpatient Pharmacy, filling of prescriptions using Script Pro automation and participation in the inventory control program. The team approach employed provides a dynamic setting with a diversity of assignments in a patient focused setting.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:  


(a)  Experience.   One year experience at the next lower level, and must fully meet the KSAs at the next lower level. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs.


(b)  Certification.   PTCB certification is required at this grade level and above.

 

Assignments:   Pharmacy technicians may be assigned to any area of the pharmacy including expanded distributive function assignments; for example assignment as team leaders for specific process improvement teams involving technical areas or performing more highly complex duties including preparation of oncology agents for clinical pharmacy specialists. For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time.

 

Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs). In addition to meeting the basic requirements, pharmacy technicians at this grade level must demonstrate the following KSAs:


1.  Ability to solve problems and make recommendations, e.g., troubleshoot operational problems and refer for appropriate action.

2.  Knowledge of the operation and care of automated equipment.

3.  Knowledge of, and ability to follow, written instructions for compounding with aseptic technique for hazardous materials such as oncology agents.

4.  Knowledge, and ability to perform, compound with aseptic technique for routine sterile products.

5.  Knowledge of policies and procedures for inventory management in specialized areas such as emergency carts.

6.  Knowledge of the computerized prescription process demonstrated by the ability to input prescriptions and medication orders.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Principle duties require repetitive use of hands and fingers (e.g., preparing prescriptions, use of a computer keyboard, etc.). May require lifting and carrying light loads (up to 44 lbs.), including boxes, equipment, medical supplies, stock boxes etc.; stooping or kneeling (e.g., to pick up items from the floor, remove and replace items on lower shelves, and to file documents in lower file drawers, etc.); sitting, walking, or standing for long periods of time (4-8 hours). Ability to operate automation. Normal ranges of hearing and vision are required to perform work and communicate effectively. An ability to perform tasks requiring rapid mental and muscular coordination functions simultaneously is necessary. Must be physically capable of operating various types of equipment used for the job.
