The Office of Inspector General (OIG), works within the U. S. Department of Transportation (DOT) to prevent or stop waste, fraud and abuse in departmental programs. The OIG also consults with the Congress about programs in progress and proposed new laws and regulations. The OIG carries out its mission by issuing audit reports, evaluations, and management advisories with findings and recommendations to improve program delivery and performance. It conducts investigations into whether Federal laws and regulations were followed and reports suspected civil and criminal violations to the Attorney General.
This is a student internship opportunity under the DOT Pathways Program. After successful completion of the program requirements, the individual may be converted to a permanent or TERM appointment, though there is no guarantee of conversion.

This position is located in the Department of Transportation (DOT), Office of Inspector General (OIG), Office of the Chief Information Officer, Washington, DC. You will be responsible for the following duties:
(1) providing second level support for the Information Technology (IT) Help Desk;
(2) working with the Tier 1 support staff to triage IT issues, and record them in ticket tracking system;
(3) prioritizing issues based on standard operating procedures and service level agreements;
(4) following standard operating procedures to resolve customer questions/problems concerning automation systems, software/hardware issues, password security violations, telecommunication troubles and work orders;
(5) installing, configuring, and troubleshooting hardware ensuring information security/information assurance policies, principles, and practices are adhered to;
(6) maintaining an automated trouble ticket system;
(7) developing, coordinating and assisting in the operation of IT equipment;
(8) organizing and distributing PC's;
(9) installing new software versions and updates and configures hardware and/or user systems for effective integration of software systems;
(10) performing upgrades of hardware to include memory, fixed storage, and installation of network interface cards (NIC) or enhancement cards;
(11) interacting with users to ensure proper operation of computer systems, hardware, and software; and,
(12) automating repetitive tasks such as ghosting software images and software.

To qualify for the GS-5 Student Trainee (IT Specialist) position you must possess the following:
A. Completion of a bachelors degree in computer science, engineering, information science, information systems management, mathematics, operations research, statistics, or technology management or degree that provided a minimum of 24 semester hours in one or more of the fields identified above and required the development or adaptation of applications, systems or networks.
B. One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-4 level in the Federal service. Specialized experience includes, but not limited to, working with clients and customers providing IT support in a help desk setting; assessing customers needs, providing information or assistance, and resolving their problems.
IT related experience must demonstrate each of the four competencies listed below:
Attention to Detail - Is thorough when performing work and conscientious about attending to detail.
Customer Service - Works with clients and customers (that is, any individuals who use or receive the services or products that your work unit produces, including the general public, individuals who work in the agency, other agencies, or organizations outside the Government) to assess their needs, provide information or assistance, resolve their problems, or satisfy their expectations; knows about available products and services; is committed to providing quality products and services.
Oral Communication - Expresses information (for example, ideas or facts) to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information (for example, technical, sensitive, controversial); makes clear and convincing oral presentations; listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds appropriately.
Problem Solving - Identifies problems; determines accuracy and relevance of information; uses sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives, and to make recommendations.
NOTE: An academic year of undergraduate education is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in an accredited college or university.
