This Patient Care Technician positions are located within the Vaccine Evaluation Center (VEC), Medical Surgical Specialties (MSS) Service, and the Inpatient Unit Neurology and Sleep Lab, Neuroscience, Behavioral Health and Pediatrics (NBHP) Service, Nursing Department at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Clinical Center (CC), in the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The Patient care technicians report directly to a Nurse Manager for a unit or clinic within the specialty areas and works under the delegation of a Clinical Research Nurse.


The National Institutes of Health (NIH), Clinical Center (CC), is the 240-bed research hospital and ambulatory care research facility in Bethesda, Maryland that supports the Intramural Research Program (IRP) of the National Institutes of Health. It is the largest inpatient facility in the country devoted exclusively to clinical research, and provides a full range of services from ambulatory care to critical care and special procedures. The focus at the CC on early phase and first-in-human clinical trials and on the study of rare diseases makes it possible to rapidly translate scientific observations and laboratory discoveries into new approaches for diagnosing, treating, and preventing disease.

The ideal candidate for the Vaccine Evaluation Center (VEC) will have phlebotomy experience.

If you are selected for this position your responsibilities will include:

  • Performs phlebotomy and other procedures after completion of certification and/or training and competency validation completed.
    • Constantly monitors stock to ensure it is being utilized within the proper time limitations.  Promptly identifies, removes, reports and disposes of outdated and/or contaminated supplies.
    • Assists patients or other health care team members with prescribed interventions as directed by the Clinical Research Nurse.
    • Reinforces patient instructions in the proper technique of various self-administered treatments and documents the activities performed.
    • Collects specimens for clinical and/or research care, handles and delivers in accordance with prescribed protocols.
    • Obtains and records vital signs; temperature, blood pressure, height/weight, and reports any abnormal findings to the clinical nurse.
    • Utilizes automated equipment and devices safely.
    • Reinforces policies and procedures to patient and families in conjunction with the clinical nurse teaching.

    You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying experience equivalent to at least the GS-06 level in the Federal Service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: interpreting medical test results; assisting patients with grooming, bathing, and meals; collecting patient specimens; obtaining and recording vital signs (i.e., temperature, blood pressure, weight, height); performing point of care tests; and using a variety of patient care equipment (i.e., automated blood pressure devices, and transport devises).


    Completed 1 full year (18 semester hours) of graduate level education toward a graduate degree that is directly related to the work of the position.


    A combination of post baccalaureate education and experience that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position.
