The Department of Defense Domestic Dependent Elementary and Secondary Schools (DDESS) is currently accepting applications under examining authority of 10 U.S.C., Section 2164 for Information Technology Specialist (System Admin/Network) at Fort Benning, Georgia. This vacancy announcement will be used for the purpose of filling this permanent, full-time position.  Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) is a DoD Field Activity responsible for the oversight of two school systems, the Department of Defense Dependents Schools (DoDDS) and the Department of Defense Domestic Dependent Elementary & Secondary Schools (DDESS). DoDEA employs more than 15,000 individuals responsible for educating approximately 90,000 students in 12 foreign countries, seven states, Guam, and Puerto Rico. The mission of DoDEA is to provide a quality education from pre-kindergarten through grade twelve for the eligible minor family members of DoD military and civilian personnel on official assignments.

Employee serves as a desktop operating systems expert for all IT desktop implementations that occur at assigned district.  Coordinates with other IT support personnel as needed to analyze requirements, plan systems architecture, ensure desktop quality, document, train, install, configure and maintain desktop operating systems.  Employee uses expert knowledge of desktop operating systems patching, component installation, configuration, and unattended deployment to develop strategy for upgrading desktop OS.  Employee maintains knowledge and supports installation of administrative software, educational software and web based services on desktop OS.  Employee utilizes thorough knowledge of interdependency of workstation based software, the workstation operating system, workstation helper applications, workstation browsers, client server services and web based servers to analyze, document and plan for additions, upgrade or configuration of application software and web services operation.  Employee analyzes application software and web services information assurance requirements and coordinates with other IT Specialists to ensure confidentiality, integrity and availability of software.  Employee coordinates with Infrastructure Operations Branch IT specialists to ensure that network bandwidth and web servers are available as needed to support workstation desktop operating system.  Employee uses thorough knowledge of web servers, directory services, authentication, permission, firewalls and TCP/IP networking to contribute to architecture to support web services access from DDESS desktop operating systems.  Employee uses software deployment technologies to install, configure and maintain workstation software and workstation web services in response to customer requests.  Employee analyzes incident request trends and patterns to detect opportunities to improve desktop operating systems.  Employee responds to incident requests to provide desk side analysis of desktop operating systems, software or hardware problems.  Employee takes corrective action as needed by removing reinstalling or reconfiguring desktop software or web services.  Employee takes corrective action as needed by upgrading or reconfiguring device drivers and coordinating failed hardware replacement.  Employee explains, illustrates and demonstrates proper use of desktop operating system, software and web services to customers within their best knowledge when the incident turns out to be usage.  Employee creates shortcut guides, how to tips, flow diagrams and user documentation in response to trends in incident requests or new or changes in desktop operating system software or web services.  Install and update helpdesk and/or workstation imaging software on servers within District.

One year of specialized experience at the next lower grade level, AD/GS-11 (or equivalent level), is required.  Specialized experience is defined as serving as a desktop operating systems expert for all IT desktop implementations.


Education is not substituable for experience at the AD/GS-12 or equivalent level.

Must meet OPM minimum qualification standards to be considered for this position.
