JOB SUMMARY:

A career with the Forest Service will challenge you to manage and care for more than 193 million acres of our nation's most magnificent lands, conduct research through a network of forest and range experiment stations and the Forest Products Laboratory, and provide assistance to State and private forestry agencies.

This is a term, time-limited appointment with an initial duration no less than 13 months and can be extended up to a total of 4 years.

The USDA Forest Service has legislative authority to recruit and fill Permanent (Career/Career-Conditional), Temporary, and Term Appointments under the USDA Demonstration Project. Under this authority, any U.S. citizen may apply.

This position is located on the Superior National Forest, duty location of Tofte, Minnesota.

Formulating, writing and editing environmental documents such as Decision Memos, Environmental Assessments, and Environmental Impact Statements to ensure accuracy, compliance with policy, and readability for the public. 

Conducts routine environmental studies and evaluations linking a variety of resources, such as social economics, land, air, water, timber, recreation, wildlife, fisheries, and/or special management areas.

Gathers and reviews data and documents from resource specialists and complies documents into NEPA planning record.

Serves as team member and/or team leader on interdisciplinary teams which carry out environmental studies and evaluations to determine the consequences of actions or projects on the environment

Supports GIS and resource specialists in assessing, interpreting, and applying GIS data to the NEPA process. Develops GIS products such as maps or tables for use in displaying resource management projects and environmental effects.

Bachelor's Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry or related disciplines appropriate to the position.

OR

A combination of education and experience with course equivalent to a major described above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In addition to the basic requirement, the following additional education and/or experience are qualifying. Transcripts must be provided for qualifications based on education. Your application or resume must clearly show that you possess the specialized experience requirements. Specialized experience is defined as experience that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled and has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.

GS-9: 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree (coursework directly related to the position being filled); one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-7 level; and/or a combination of graduate level education and specialized experience.

Examples of specialized are: Participated in environmental assessments and drafted segments of environmental impact statements; Served as a member on interdisciplinary teams in a variety of aspects related to analysis of natural resource projects; Gathered, documented, presented, and analyzed data in environmental assessment reports or technical reports; Edited scientific or environmental documents for content for style, clarity, and accuracy and exercised editorial control for assigned publication; Assisted in natural resources management activities.

This evaluation is based on the level of your experience, education, and/or training as determined by your responses to the Occupational Questionnaire.
