WHO MAY BE CONSIDERED: Open to all qualified U.S. citizens. You do not have to be a current or former government employee to be considered for this position. This recruitment will be used to full seasonal appointments. These appointments are not to exceed 1039 hours in a twelve month period, although positions may be terminated sooner or extended depending on management needs.

The work schedule for these positions may fluctuate between full-time, part-time, and intermittent schedules. (PCS is not authorized for seasonal positions).


Will be expected to operate and maintain different types of mechanized equipment such as, gas powered jack-hammers, gas powered drills, generators, and chainsaws. Will be expected to operate rigging equipment such as, grip-hoists, come-a-longs, and high lines. Must be knowledgeable in the use of hand tools. Will construct and maintain water diversion structures, check/steps, walls, rip-rap, and trail tread in both front and back-country locations. Will be expected to mix and pour concrete, and work with both hot and cold mix asphalt,  move heavily loaded wheelbarrows and hand trucks; stack heavy logs, rocks and sacks of cement, etc. or perform other duties. Additional duties to this position include, under supervision; the installation and repair of ADA asphalt surfaced trails in developed and congested areas. Duties also include wet and dry-retaining wall repair and construction.  Will be required to build and repair dry-laid stone masonry on a regular basis. 
Will work with fall protection equipment (climbing gear) to mitigate potential falls, will be required to reconstruct walls on ledges that are exposed and precarious, often near cliffedges in excess of 400 vertical feet. Will be required to work away from duty stations in bunkhouse or backcountry (camping) environments for periods of no less than 9 days and frequently for periods of up to 30 days.  All employees are required to hike up to 10 miles per day on steep, narrow, and congested trails often carrying heavy packs and equipment (50lbs). Will be required to perform these tasks with minimal supervision in areas where the ambient temperature can exceed 100 degrees in the summer and dip below 0 degrees in the winter.
Laborers will also often be required to work around or beneath helicopters, sweep, mop, and clean compost toilet stalls, and assist with livestock operations when necessary.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: This is a temporary position that is based on a work schedule of not to exceed 1039 hours.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work performed requires the exertion of very heavy physical effort involving lifting and moving objects over 50 pounds, and in some cases, carrying 80 to 100 pounds (or more) with assistance.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is usually performed under all kinds of weather conditions.

AREA INFORMATION: This position is stationed at the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park located in Northwest Arizona, approximately 60 miles north of Williams and 85 miles Northwest of Flagstaff at an elevation of 7,000 feet. Temperatures range from approximately 85 degrees in the summer to 17 degrees in the winter. Grand Canyon Village has schools K-12, a daycare center, post office, general store, banking facilities, churches, a recreation center, a clinic with resident physicians and several restaurants. The park community consists of some 2,000 people, including employees of the NPS and concessionaires and their family members. There are often employment opportunities for family members in the park and surrounding areas. The park community is small enough that many employees choose to walk or bike from their homes to work. Complete shopping, educational, medical and professional services are available in Williams and Flagstaff. Recreational opportunities include hiking, river rafting, fishing, cross-country and downhill skiing, and golfing in nearby communities.

Employees obtain housing either through a bid system or by assignment into shared furnished quarters. Because of limited housing, when an employees is assigned shared quarters, the park is not able to provide accommodations for family member and pets.
