The mission of the Architect of the Capitol is to serve Congress and the Supreme Court, preserve America's Capitol and inspire memorable experiences. Under the leadership of Stephen T. Ayers, FAIA, LEED AP, the roles and responsibilities of the Architect of the Capitol cover an expansive and diverse portfolio. The AOC is responsible for the maintenance, operation, development and preservation of 17.4 million square feet of buildings and more than 470 acres of land throughout Capitol Hill. The employee is a Gardener (Advanced) Leader and applies horticultural technology, engineering equipment operation, gardening, and groundskeeping skills to develop and enhance the Supreme Court Buildings and Grounds interior and exterior superior floral appearance.
As teamleader, the employee articulates and communicates to the team the assignment, project, problems to be solved, actionable events, milestones, and/or program issues under review, and deadlines and time frames for completion.
The employee is responsible for maintaining the optimum health and appearance of the trees, shrubs, grass and interior and exterior ornamental plants as well as landscape design, exhibits and floral displays, grounds-keeping and special events.
Measures and mixes chemicals, such as fertilizers, fungicides, herbicides, and insecticides to control plant diseases, insects, and weeds.

Performs a range of task affiliated with the growing and tending of lawns, flowers, shrubs, and trees.

Provides scientific and technical guidance to international, national, state, or local government agencies, academia, and private or public organizations with regard to horticultural studies, projects, and issues. Applies an understanding of horticulture and allied fields such as landscape architecture, plant pathology, entomology, soil science, and botany to assist with project reviews and provide technical information and assistance.
Performs work to support the planning and implementation of public programs including educational forums, technical training, and informational materials about horticultural studies, projects, collections, or exhibits. Assists in preparing articles, presenting programs, and developing other interpretive materials on horticultural topics.
