You will perform a variety of medical screening tests,  check vital signs (blood pressure and pulse) and obtains height and weight on all clients preparatory to a complete medical examination, conduct surveys, analyze findings, prepare reports, and maintain industrial hygiene (IH) equipment. Conduct assessments to evaluate existing potential health hazards and recommend solutions to problems. Conduct surveys and investigations of work operations, identifying and evaluating conditions which may be hazardous to the health or workers. Perform respirator fit testing per appropriate standards and guidelines. Provide worker training on respirator selection, usage, care; and sanitation practices; and chemical health hazards in the work place as required. Calibrate IH equipment, checking for compliance with existing calibration schedules. Perform minor repair of equipment or ship equipment requiring major overhauls. Maintain records associated with maintenance and calibration of equipment.

Specialized experience: To Qualify applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade/level GS-04.  Specialized experience is defined as: knowledge of the basic concepts, principles, policies and practices of occupational health and experience helping with independent screenings. Specialized experience must provide the candidate with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to do the work and be related to the position to be filled. 

Specialized experience: To Qualify applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade/level GS-5.  Specialized experience is defined as: using knowledge of occupational health program concepts, principles, policies and practices to perform independent inspections and the ability to maitain health, vision, and respiratory programs. Specialized experience must provide the candidate with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to do the work and be related to the position to be filled. 

Specialized experience: To Qualify applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade/level GS-06.  Specialized experience is defined as: identifying and evaluating conditions inside and outside the workplace that may affect employee health; calibrating of industrial hygiene equipment; operating and maintaining field and laboratory instruments; assisting with industrial hygiene investigations; and performing work-site sampling of reviews. Specialized experience must provide the candidate with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to do the work and be related to the position to be filled.

You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency (knowledge, skills, abilities) in the following areas:

  • Medical Screening
  • Conduct surveys; analyze findings and prepare reports  
  • Maintenance and calibration of equipment
  • Use office automation

 

 

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must meet the Time in Grade Restriction.

 

Time in Grade Restriction: Must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade (or equivalent).


 

For GS-5 level positions, only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements. Two full academic years of study, or 60 semester hours, beyond the second year is equivalent to l year of specialized experience. Determine the applicant's total qualifying experience as a percentage of the year of specialized experience required at the GS-5 level. Then determine the applicant's education as a percentage of the education that meets the requirements for GS-5. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify an applicant for GS-5

 

Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. One full year of graduate education meets the requirements for GS-7.  One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended.
