Incumbent is responsible for packing livestock with supplies throughout Grand Canyon National Park, caring, feeding, and providing basic veterinary care for livestock, assisting trail crew leaders by providing transport of groceries and equipment to inner-canyon bunkhouses and spike camps, cleaning, repairing and maintaining saddles and associated tack, and maintaining a high degree of safety (for livestock, visitors, workers, and self) in the performance of these duties. The animal caretaker is responsible for preparing, securing and packing loads of various sizes, shapes and weights using hitches appropriate to the task at hand, feeding, medical treating (including administering subcutaneous and intramuscular injections), the general care of livestock and livestock facilities, and transporting mules via trailer both in and out of Grand Canyon National Park.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: This is a Tem position. Initial appointment is 13 months with possible extensions up to 4 years.

PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORKING CONDITIONS: Incumbent must have the physical ability to perform tasks which require handling heavy objects (over 75 lbs) of various weights, sizes and shapes. Exposure to dust, steep narrow trails, noise, and congested areas will be frequent. Incumbent will be subject to strain related to riding stock for long periods of time. Maintenance workers will be required to hike long distances (10 miles or more) in varying terrain and extreme weather conditions while carrying heavy packs and tools.

OTHER SIGNIFICANT FACTS: Employees must be fit and able to hike and perform strenuous labor. Employees must maintain a drug and alcohol free work place. All policies regarding drug and alcohol will be addressed upon acceptance of position. Use of drugs or alcohol will be terms for immediate dismissal of duty. Work may require travel in a helicopter or boat to access remote locations. This position may require schedule changes, these changes can be made with little prior warning. Employee will be exposed to inclement weather conditions, varying from extreme heat in the summer (100 degrees or more) or to extreme cold during the winter season (often below 0 degrees). Will be exposed to new, unbroken stock, moving equipment, various cutting tools, and crowded, congested areas. Will be working at elevations ranging from 2000 to 8000 feet. Will be exposed to the hazards of stock animals, such as being kicked, bitten, bucked off, or stepped on.

AREA INFORMATION: This position is stationed at the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park located in Northwest Arizona, approximately 60 miles north of Williams and 85 miles Northwest of Flagstaff at an elevation of 7,000 feet. Temperatures range from approximately 85 degrees in the summer to 17 degrees in the winter. Grand Canyon Village has schools K-12, a daycare center, post office, general store, banking facilities, churches, a recreation center, a clinic with resident physicians and several restaurants. The park community consists of some 2,000 people, including employees of the NPS and concessionaires and their family members. There are often employment opportunities for family members in the park and surrounding areas. The park community is small enough that many employees choose to walk or bike from their homes to work. Complete shopping, educational, medical and professional services are available in Williams and Flagstaff. Recreational opportunities include hiking, river rafting, fishing, cross-country and downhill skiing, and golfing in nearby communities.

Employees obtain housing either through a bid system or by assignment into shared furnished quarters. Because of limited housing, when an employees is assigned shared quarters, the park is not able to provide accommodations for family member and pets. QUALIFICATIONS

Requirements

1. If new to Federal Civil Service, you will be required to serve a probationary period of 1 year.

2. National Park Service (NPS) uniformed position. Employee will be required to wear a uniform and comply with NPS uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided to defray the cost of the uniform.

3. You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists), you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid State issued drivers license that is current and has not been revoked, suspended, canceled, or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle. You will also submit a photocopy of your valid State issued drivers license prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year, or more frequently if management determines such need exists. Lastly, you may be required to submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that discloses all valid drivers licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. Please indicate in your application whether you possess a valid State drivers license. 

HOW YOU WILL BE EVALUATED:

* Experience in the repair of leather goods, saddles and tack. Knowledge and experience in providing feed scheduling and maintaining general good health to livestock (mules).

* Experience in general grounds keeping duties

* Experience in working with others.
