This is a permanent (career/career conditional),subject-to-furlough position.  This position does not provide employment on a year round basis. Employees will work a minimum of 26 weeks but generally not more than 50 weeks per service year. Actual work schedule and periods of furlough or non-pay time is contingent upon funding and operational needs.  Federal government housing MAY BE available.


MAJOR DUTIES: Under the guidance and direct supervision of Yellowstone's Supervisory Vegetation Specialist, incumbent leads efforts to inventory, monitor, and research the vegetation resources of the park, as well as implement native vegetation restoration of disturbed rangelands. Prepares and contributes to writing Environmental Impact Statements. Identifies, designs, develops and implements vegetation inventory and monitors protocols. Researches management oriented and basic science needs surrounding plant/animal interactions, disturbance ecology of plant species of special management concern, native/exotic plant community dynamics, and/or ecological processes using hypothesis testing. Leads dryland native vegetation restoration. Incorporates GPS/GIS technology for data collection, analysis and presentation. Prepares requests for proposals, grant applications, management and scientific reports and technical publications. Serves as Contracting Officer's Technical Representative on projects through contracts, interagency and cooperative agreements. Leads, recruits, trains, evaluates other Federal employees and park volunteers.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:The position may require strenuous physical activity including periods of standing, walking, climbing, and lifting and carrying heavy objects. Some activities will occur in physically dangerous areas or settings. Documentary research and report writing are sedentary, which entails the ability to concentrate and write for long periods of time.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather. Assignments may be performed in potentially hazardous areas, including steep slopes, rocky terrain, wildland firelines, volcanoes, caves, artic environments, swamps, deserts and forests. May fly in fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters.

AREA INFORMATION:This position will be located at park headquarters in Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone National Park. Elevation at Mammoth is 6,200 feet. Temperatures vary from an average of 70 degrees in summer to sub-zero at times in winter. Schools are available with kindergarten through 12 located in Gardiner, Montana, five miles north of headquarters. Free bus transportation is provided for school children between Mammoth and Gardiner. Many community facilities such as stores, a drugstore, motels, and restaurants are available in Gardiner. A medical clinic is available in Mammoth. All other services are available within 55 to 75 miles of Mammoth.
