This position is located in the Directorate for Geosciences, Office of the Assistant Director for Geosciences.The Directorate for Geosciences (GEO) is one of seven research arms within the National Science Foundation. Its mission is to support research in the atmospheric, earth, and ocean sciences. As the principal source of federal funding for university-based fundamental research in the geosciences, GEO addresses the nation's need to understand, predict, and respond to environmental events and changes to use Earth's resources wisely. Basic research in the geosciences advances scientific knowledge of Earth's environment, including resources such as water, energy, minerals, and biological diversity. GEO-supported research also advances our ability to predict natural phenomena of economic and human significance, such as climate changes, weather, earthquakes, fish-stock fluctuations, and disruptive events in the solar-terrestrial environment.

Incumbent works closely with the Assistant Director (AD) in management planning, meeting planning and coordination and organizing policy activities. Specific duties include: Serving as a confidential assistant to the Assistant Director and handling confidential and sensitive information with discretion; serving as liaison between GEO and other directorates in NSF; working with senior staff to formulate decisions regarding business needs, improve effectiveness by monitoring and assessing complex management processes and projects by applying analytical methods and techniques; researching a wide variety of subjects and analyzing data and information in order to provide the AD with authoritative information and material with which to utilize the preparation of reports, policy documents, speeches, etc.; preparing agendas, briefs of files and reports for use in conference discussions and meetings; planning and coordinating travel, accommodations and transportation arrangements; reviewing and assessing travel requests and travel vouchers to assure compliance with Federal Travel Regulations and NSF travel policies and guidance.

To qualify at the GS-9 level, you must possess at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 level in the Federal service applying analytical and evaluative techniques to the identification, consideration, and resolution of issues or problems of a procedural or factual nature. Examples of specialized experience include: serving as a personal assistant in a confidential capacity to a senior agency official; performing management planning, meeting planning, and coordinating and organizing policy activities; performing various administrative duties independently; and completing special assignments of a high priority and sensitive nature; OR A master`s or equivalent graduate degree; OR 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree; OR A combination of post high school education and experience that together meet the qualification requirements for this position.
To qualify at the GS-11 level, you must possess at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-9 level in Federal service applying analytical and evaluative techniques to issues or special projects concerning the efficiency and effectiveness of program operations. Examples of specialized experience include: speaking for the Assistant Director in informal circumstances, communicating their goals and objectives; researching a wide variety of subjects and analyzing data and information in order to provide the Assistant Director with authoritative information and materials; planning and coordinating travel, accommodations, and transportation arrangements for the Assistant Director and special guests; OR possess a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree; OR possess 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree; OR a combination of post high school education and experience that together meet the qualification requirements for this position.
Education may be substituted for experience as described in “Qualifications."
