The psychologist is to provide evidence-based care for primary care patients identified with a variety of emotional and psychiatric problems including depression, anxiety disorders, and alcohol misuse, including working with the Behavioral Health Laboratory (BHL) staff.  He/she will be responsible for monitoring patients, providing education and support, influencing adherence to guidelines by providing "on-time, on-target" information to primary care providers, and collaboratively making appropriate care decisions.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 7:45am - 4:30pm

SALARY:  Grade and Salary will be determined by a Professional Standards Board commensurate with education and experience.

Relocation Expenses: Relocation expenses are not authorized for this position.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:  

  • Citizenship.  Citizen of the United States. 
  • Education.  Have a doctoral degree in psychology from a school fully accredited by the American Psychological Association(APA). Graduates of schools of psychology that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the school is fully accredited. (Verification of the degree can be made by going to the APA website: http://www.apa.org/ed/accreditation/index.aspx to verify that psychology degree meets the accreditation standards for a doctoral of psychology.
  • Licensure. Persons hired or reassigned to psychologist positions in the GS-0180 series in VHA must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice psychology at the doctoral degree level. Current state requirements may be found on the OHRM website: http://vaww1.va.gov/ohrm/T38Hybrid/HybridOccupations.htm NOTE: For grades at or below the full performance level, psychologists who are not licensed or certified at the time of appointment must become licensed or certified at the independent, doctoral level within 2 years oftheir appointment as a psychologist.
  • Physical Requirements.  See VA Directive and Handbook 5019.
  • English Language Proficiency.  Psychologists must be proficient in spoken and written English lanquage in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Chapter 2, Section D, Paragraph 5a.

GRADE DETERMINATIONS:

GS-11 IS THE ENTRY LEVEL for the GS-180 psychologist and requires no further experience beyond the basic requirements.  They practice under the close supervision of a licensed psychologist.

GS-12 IS THE INTERMEDIATE LEVEL and in addition to the basic requirements at the GS-11 level, at least 1 year of experience as a professional psychologist equivalent to the next lower level.  Individuals assigned as a GS-12 psychologists may be in the process of obtaining licensure at the independent practice level.  If unlicensed, the individual must be supervised by a licensed psychologist and the experience and supervision must meet the standards for psychology licensure.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE FOR GS-13 LEVEL:   Requires a minimum of two years of post-doctoral degree professional psychology experience in the field of health care.   This experience must have been in a clinical setting and must have demonstrated the potential to perform advanced assignments independently. (A clinical setting is a medical center, clinic - medical or psychiatric, residential treatment center, or any other type of facility where psychologists participate in collaborative treatment and is identified with the medical profession.)    Experience must have been obtained AFTER earning a Doctoral Degree in Psychology.
